Neutrinos go faster then light !

Post by Xymox » Thu Sep 22, 2011 7:57 pm

Wow HUGE NEWS.... It appears Neutrinos might go faster then light..

That kinda changes EVERYTHING... Wow what a huge result..

Edit: This is the CERN conference announcing the results..

It would appear to be new physics because I don't think (at least I haven't heard of) any theories that predict superluminal neutrinos.
Great article here.

and

I have learned through the vixra item that there will be a webcast friday to discuss this very subject.
New results from OPERA on neutrino properties

Goodie!
:happy-jumpyellow:

oops from the vixra again "If you are wondering about theories that allow tachyonic neutrinos the least wacky one I can find is that neutrinos can take “shortcuts off the brane through large extra dimensions” "

Awesome Harbles.. I shall watch...

Just awesome stuff...

New science is a impressive technical term :)

I find it very sad the way some scientists and the press especially are jumping to the conclusion that neutrinos are travelling faster than the speed of light. It's as if... they want it to be true. No, sorry, mother nature doesn't work like that and the speed of light remaining a speed limit will be seen as correct, and the data of the OPERA experiment incorrect.

Thats a pretty bold statement. What proof do you have that the OPERA experiment results are incorrect ? I am certain they would love to hear from you because they cant find anything wrong with the results and would like to disprove the results.

Perhaps the reason that scientists would "like" this to be true is that if it is the case, then we have learned something new and unexpected about the universe. The only time one learns anything new as a scientist is when a well controlled experiment gives a result that is inconsistent with the current working hypothesis. Otherwise we're simply confirming things that we have other evidence for being correct. Faster-than-light speed would be very interesting, though I concur that there is probably some accumulated error that is the cause of the result. The scientists themselves indicate this possibility and that is why they'd like independent confirmation.

Well! That was interesting.

Here's an Interview of OPERA's spokesperson Antonio Ereditato of the University of Bern and Interview of Dario Autiero CNRS researcher in OPERA experiment
http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1384466

Here's the paper.
http://arxiv.org/abs/1109.4897

It looks to this layperson's eye like they accounted for all the factors that may affect the results. But of course all the experimentalists are going to go through this with a fine tooth comb to try an spot the "Ah ha they screwed up here!" item.

So I'd say the results are sort of in limbo till some other lab can duplicate (or not) these findings. Hello T2K? http://jnusrv01.kek.jp/public/t2k/index.php

Then it's over to the theoreticians to explain it all.

I have question, i think of most particles as an effective object with a pilot wave, while i see Neutrinos as only a wave. Is there proof that neutrinos are effectively also a particle? And in the concept of the a pilot wave, wouldn't it be logic that a neutrino wave could travel a fraction faster than a photon particle?

This is definitely worth watching. I started it with several hypotheses what could they have made wrong and they disproved all of them. They were unbelievably thorough at their measurements and verification and I don't see a single mistake there.

Yet I still think they must have made an error somewhere.

And here's another good item on this news.

And photos of the packed lecture theatre for the presentation.
