how much longer are they going to do squeez commissioning? isn"t it about time for collisions with squeezed beams!

They've listed 14 days for commissioning squeezing, higher intensity beams and physics with partial squeeze.

My impression of the squeeze commissioning is that things are going a bit slowly relative to the plan, but the plan is just that, a plan. There's no fixed deadlines, they'll take as long as they feel they need to get things working properly, you can't hurry this sort of stuff.

I'm pretty sure they'd go forward if they had it done. Just now I can see they lost about half the beam intensity when squeezing IP8 so apparently they still need to figure out how to do it better. Losing so much (and in fact even way less) at ultimate beam intensity would mean damaging the machine.
They had quite a few problems during last few days too, accidental beam dumps while commissioning do not speed things up.

It seems that higher intensity beams + squeezing = dump at the moment. There is too much at stake and too much risk of damage to hurry things. Its only 20 days since the first 7TeV collisions so things are moving along quite quickly.
Patience is required. :)

Problems they had with sirens was rather funny. Looks like destroying a siren in the LHC tunnel is a viable way of getting whole LHC out of order...

Can you post a link to the siren issue, or give more details? Sounds like the stuff that in-joke legends are made of.

It's mentioned in yesterday's presentation:
19:00: Access finished and machine closed:
- Problems closing the tunnel (sirens); beam only back at 03:00am.

Before they can start using the accelerator, all people must leave the tunnel. A siren must go for five minutes to warn everybody in that area to leave. One of these sirens was malfunctioning and the system did not let them start till they repaired it, which took several hours.

On serious note, leaving someone down there during work might be deadly so all these security measures have good reason. The funny part is just that there apparently is no backup procedure for a malfunctioning siren such as someone personally checking the tunnel or double checking all employees are out.
