2022 Operation

Post by dukwon » Wed Apr 13, 2022 5:05 pm

The machine mode has changed from "Shutdown" to "Machine checkout", so I suppose it's time to create a thread for 2022 operation.

The schedule is a bit up in the air given the cryo problem in the RF system. The commissioning spreadsheet suggests that first beams may come towards the end of next week.

Beam operation should commence Friday 22nd and last 2 weeks, until 6th May. Then there will be a 1-week break, in which the second half of the LHCb VELO should be installed.

Exciting times - beam at the LHC's doorstep (transfer lines) maybe even tomorrow and in the ring on Friday!

Are there any current links to follow the progress for the 2022 commissioning? The existing links don’t seem to be updated any more.

Same. I remember the previous run when we could follow everything, including the elogbook and so on. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be so easy anymore to get details.
If anyone knows a way to get us a little bit more, this forum would be way more fun!

Had a first attempt at a 6.5 TeV ramp with beam. Dump before reaching 3 TeV due to 2 circuit trips (arc tuning quadrupoles). Cryo lost in S12 after ramp-down (triplet quench). "Expect few hours of recovery."

That was a rather special ramp - so-called "ballistic optics" with the triplets in IP1 and 5 switched off.

Fingers crossed the nominal ramp to 6.8 TeV goes smoother...

2022 commissioning spreadsheet

CERN internal:
Morning meetings
Logbook
I used to have access to these, but it seems to be blocked. Is this a change of policy that "fans of LHC" can't look in the logbooks anymore? I had so much fun reading these...
