Why no luminosity in Alice

Post by gronos » Sun Sep 26, 2010 3:11 am

While the other detectors currently seem to have luminosities of 16 or more, Alice has none. Is it due to the specific beam type and profile?

Basically, yes.

ALICE ist not that much interested in a huge rate of collisions from feeble protons.
It eagerly awaits the fewer collisions of heavy garbage trucks ("lead ions"), each giving a big firework of particles.

So, to keep the detectors from being overwhelmed by the high proton collision rate, they asked for lower luminosity, going for more quality than quantity.
