Re: Let's go hump hunting!

if looking for a mechanical vibration in the tunnel, would they be better to bolt some geo-phones to the walls/floor ?

Re: Collisions are occuring now

What they still have to do is: - squeeze beams at collision points (in december it improved collision rate by factor of 1.5~2) - increase number of bunches (they plan to go to about half the projected number which is about 1400 bunches per beam - just this could increase collision rate by factor of...

looks like they were making sure the emergency stop buttons were wroking ...
Ramping down after deliberate
asynchronous dump
about to try another dump?
Check of asynchronous dump at 3.5 TeV by switching of RF and allowing beam to debunch during 90 s:

Re: Portal web outage

Welcome back :-)
Given the various outages at the LHC all day (and night), we haven't missed much

Re: Event Display

One weird thing that has been going on for the last hour or so, the LHCb status displays have been showing the same intensities for beams 1 and 2, even though only one beam is circulating

first time I have seem 'beam setup - cycling' in a while :-)
(or anything else than 'no beam' come to that)

Re: Advanced LHC superconducting magnets successfully tested

Whwn this is ready and proven (say 10 years), will this be a shut down LHC for 12 months and replace just some of the magnets job? or is a total rip out and rebuild of everything in the tunnels?

Re: Why is one Beam Falling?

They have tweaked the tuning before the current fill. The beam decay rate now seems similar for both beams. estimated beam lifetime is 10 hours :-)

Re: What do the displays mean ?

It was like that last night, made things much easier to see
also I note that page one now has a 'recovery' mode

Re: What do the displays mean ?

A couple of interesting changes on the lhc_operations screen

* the graphs now show 20 hours of info, not 2hrs

* the energy label at the top of the screen is now in TeV, not GeV

is longer beam duration, higher energy testing planned soon ??
(is Xymox right again?)

Re: interesting simple LHC introduction found

I am using FF 3 in Ubuntu 8.04LTS on the Fit PC2, FF 3.5 in XP on my laptop, and IE at work. and the portal works fine on all machines. Here is my Ubuntu box . My smallest, lowest power consumption machine (<15 watts, including the hub and the DVD drive), with the biggest screen (about 1600x1200) Dave

Re: Next generation of collider to replace the LHC

I think it is good idea to start planning next one, while the experiances of building this one are still fresh in their minds, and the people who built it are still around to suggest improvements for next time.

Then they can add the improvements from the 'operations' side in 5 year or so time.
