Re: How easy is it to switch between 25ns and 50ns operation

In my opinion biggest problem of 25ns will be the handling, reduction and the interpretation of the collected rawdata. They will have more collisions at least over short periods of time so it will be harder to tell them apart. Also the problem with the overheating of the injectionkickers will sure n...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

to me it looks like they try to sceduel dumps somewhere around 15h or 200pB^-1 but often they dont reach this. the only beams that were kept much longer than this were kept for the reaso nthat there was no setupbeam available from the SPS at that time so dumping would have left them with nothing, no...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

can anybody tell me why there is often the status: "waiting for injectionkickers to cool down" lately.
I cannot remeber seeing this status last year, whats new there now that they often have to wait for the kickers to cool down only recently?

Re: Mental illness

The example with starting a fire by turning wood seems to be a good one to me, I wonder what humans and human life would look like today if fearfull persons had stopped the first ones who tryed to make fire this way. I agree, trying something unprecedented always is a risk, but learning nothing by t...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Seems reasonable what you say, but to me it rather also applies here: never touch a running system, average turnaroundtimes of 2h look like nothing more than a nice wish to me. Observing rather shows that problemtimes of 5 to 10h after every 2nd dump seem to be the more likely case atm.

yes, Atlas ended up with 209pb-1 after ca. 20h of run. :-)

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Looks like they have another record fill this time, ATLAS and CMS each way above 100.000 integrated fill luminoaity @ 13 houres stable beams and not yet the end.

Re: World's most powerful laser to tear apart vacuum of spac

Hi Chelle, I agree with you that whenever something new is done everything is possible and if we always lived to the maxime "better dont do anything you dont know, it could be dangerous" then from the that time knowledge point of view the melting of the first metal ore was a highly dangerous thing w...

Re: World's most powerful laser to tear apart vacuum of spac

I wonder if some fears wouldnt even arise if the journalists wouldnt always find such negatively blooming words like "tearing apart the fabric of space" or even "god particle" what sound scary to many people. In cannot help thinking that scaring people more than necessary on purpuse is part of their...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

what he meand but couldnt describe convincing is that like there are black holes for the force of gravity there could also be similar singularitys for the electromagnetic force.
All this can be read in the beginning of this gigant thread.

Re: Protons and Special Relativity

Thanks Kasuha for this contribution about this new confirmed effect. I wonder if this is connected to the relativistic mass-gain of the proton or if it is just a totaly different effect. Evenso macroscopic considerations will never tell the whole truth about particlepysics, but i try tu enpicture th...

Re: Protons and Special Relativity

In Wikipedia they state the mass of a proton as 938MeV this must be the restmass according to E0mC^2 sin the the protons in the LHC have a an energy of 4TeV = 4,000,000MeV so you can see that most of this mass must be due to the relavistic effect.

Re: Have they ...?

B: They found some events that could indicate that a higgs was created, but up to now they are only to 99% sure that any of this events show a real Higgsboson and there is still the chance that what they saw was only a part of the background noise. the whole proof of the Higgs will be a statistical ...
