Re: Higgs could be found before Christmas!

Then I guess it would be tough for scientists to convince their governments that future accelerators are necessary.

Re: Higgs could be found before Christmas!

Good article - I'm curious as to what happens next.

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

Yes, I believe it was in the context of cosmic rays. I know I've gone through it before, but for some reason my anxiety regarding vacuum bubbles came back. But thanks again for the reassuring answers, photino and Kasuha.

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

oxodoes told me in chat a few months ago that the reason iron can be compared to lead is because of the way heavy ions behave in an electric field. I have no idea what he meant by that, and that's what I'm trying to figure out.

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Am I the only one that kind of misses Ivan? He was always fun to have around.

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

Thanks for clarifying that one, photino. But what about the behavior of heavy ions in an electric field? Doesn't it have anything to do with it?

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

I'm going to email some professors asking them my questions regarding this issue. Thanks anyway.

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

I understand what you're saying, but that wasn't my question. I simply want to know the reasons for physicists saying iron is comparable to lead.

But what are those "elementary theoretical considerations"?

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

I read the RHIC safety report several times, to be honest with you. In fact, that is the cause for me worrying over the vacuum instability event, since they clearly state we have to look at both types of collisions separately in order to exclude the possibility of it happening. But it doesn't state ...

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

I read the LSAG report more than once, and it doesn't state the reason for comparing iron with lead. Maybe I'm missing something?

Re: Vacuum Bubbles

Can anyone please explain to me why iron cosmic rays imply lead collisions are safe? I understand it's because of heavy ions' behavior in an electric field, but I'm not sure I get what it means. Can anyone please address my question? oxodoes told me this in chat a few months ago, but I don't unders...

Vacuum Bubbles

Hi everyone, I'm sure you remember I used to be afraid of the LHC creating vacuum bubbles in the Pb + Pb collisions back in November. Lately, I've started fearing the LHC going into higher energies in 2014. The reason I'm worried is because no direct measurements of lead cosmic rays at energies high...

Since we haven't heard from Ivan in almost 6 months, what do you think has happened to him?

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

I have a question for you guys - what was the energy of the Pb + Pb collisions in this last November? And at what energy are they going to perform Pb + Pb collisions in 2014?
