Re: Current Events Discussion
@Hokie_Engineer, you are right. Intensity is the number of particles in the beam. Increasing intensity leads to higher luminosity which means more collisions and you need a lot of those to see new physics. There are other ways to increase luminosity, such as squeezing the bunches down to make a narr...

Re: Current Events Discussion
They are going for a 10x10 bunch scheme as mentioned in the special report today.
This scheme will not have more collisions per turn that the 7x7 bunch scheme, but the beam-beam interactions are cleaner. So peak luminosity will not be improved but stability and lifetime might be.

Re: Current Events Discussion
Yes, they had a couple of good runs and pushed the integrated luminosity past 70 inverse nano barns. earlier they had a luminosity of over 1e30 cm-2s-1 but they only held it for 16 minutes. They then reduced intensity a little and the later runs were around half that luminosity but lasted much longe...

Re: Current Events Discussion
In fact they did reach record luminosity 1.1E30 cm-2s-1 yesterday evening.
Still looking for a siustained run with stable beams though

Re: Current Events Discussion
I dont think they got the luminosity they were after, but at least their humor is not dented.
Think they will have another shot at it this afternoon.

Re: Current Events Discussion
They started with even higher bunch intensities this time, 120 billion ppb, luminosities therefore a little higher.
The coordination vista indicates a planned jump to 6x6 bunches on Thursday.
The sudden losses might be a bit of a concern though.

Re: Current Events Discussion
 STABLE BEAMS lasted 14 hours. This must have provided at least 10 inverse-nanobarns in one run! The total integrated luminosity up to this point was about 20 inverse nano-barns. This run justifies the break from physics runs to get high intensity bunches working. Hopefully there will be anot...

Havn't seen that for a while!
Hope its high intensity bunches and not a fallback to previous physics setup.

Re: Current Events Discussion
More details of the current plan can be found in this talk on short to medium term planning where medium term means 10 years!: https://indico.desy.de/contributionDisplay.py?contribId=8&sessionId=15&confId=1964 There have been no physics runs for about three weeks now. If they can achieve smooth runn...
