"... the titanic subterranean magno-doughnut particle smasher ..."

Yay for Lewis!

Edit: looks like they are getting ready for the real thing tonight. (19:26 CET)

Anyone who doesn't take truth seriously in small matters cannot be trusted with large ones either by Albert Einstein.

There was a minor event wednesday, where the new Quench Protection System (nQPS) was a bit too quick deciding to quickly stop 50 magnets by heating them.
The results were so drastic that you can even see in on the temp graph of S78 http://hcc.web.cern.ch/HCC/cryo_main/cr ... &sector=78 (this will vanish in a week from this post).
This is not a real problem, more an annoyance.
Effects for what I understand now are:
  • beam postponed till Friday
  • max energy 1 TeV until further notice :(
I am convinced they'll fix this soon, after they have analysed all the data.
(While typing this, Emmylou put the link to the latest info in. Thanks!)

It certainly seems to know how to quench, simply needs to be taught when to quench. Pity it will hold up getting to 3.5TEV for a while.

So basically it's the safety systems being over enthusiastic ?

Better over for we all saw what happened, given what existed then, when it was under protetive.

over = LHC never starts
under = LHC fails
So I guess we need them "just right".

Well there is an area of acceptable tolerance, it's just a matter of defining it.
