Hello to all

Post by josch222 » Sat Dec 12, 2009 5:21 pm

Just want to say hello, introduce myself and thanks for this great site.

I am not so in particle physics and sometimes ask myself if humans are
really capable to understand what happens on the tiniest scales. May be we
are able to describe this all mathematically, but to really comprehend?
Please somebody explain me: What is a color charge? ;-)

What I find fascinating about the LHC is the huge engineering effort.
I'm designing electronics for battery management systems for large
Li-Ion battery stacks. They are mostly used in electric cars, AUVs and planes.
Here is may favorite project and i'm really happy because it had its first flight early this month (in the Swiss, only about 280km from CERN):

You can find photos and a video on the site and if you want you can "buy" a solar cell:

You can find mine if you search for any numbers in my user name ;-)

It is the charge of the strong force ;)

Think of it the same way as about electric charge. The only difference is, that there is not only 2 kinds (+ and -), but three types of charge. As you have to name it someway, someone choose red, green and blue (therefore colour charge).

The fun part is, that you could combine two and get the opposite of the third one. 8-)
-> red + green = anti-blue

By the way: welcome to this cool site

A very warm welcome to you Josch :)

Real nice welcome post :)

Hope you have fun here and come into the chatroom too :D

Welcome!

That's a cool project! Sponsoring a solar cell... yay!

Thanks for the explanation.

I find this very difficult to imagine. Electrons, protons, neutrons are perfect for me,
without this model my daily work would be far less understandable. You can see
(and sometimes feel or smell ;-) ) that this model works, at least for all who deal
with electricity.
The color analogy may be a nice model, but it is very clear that is has really
nothing to do with light and you will never "feel" or otherwise get a direct experience
of the strong force or their charges.
I think it is a bit strange that the deeper you look things seems to get more and more
complicated. I would expect it where the other way. If this goes on we will never
know how the universe "works".

Hehe, if you ask a theorist, they tell you that it gets easier
What they mean though is that you have to make fewer assumption and less theories to explain more. But the mathematics involved is just lunatic (at least to me)

The problem with the strong force is that it reaches out only ~ 10^-15 m, so very hard to experience it directly.

Yes, and like the LHC the team consists of experts from all over the world.
You need really good professionals to build a plane with the wingspan of an Airbus
and the weight of a car. And a lot of money.
But the funding is nearly entirely through big private sponsors,
the cell sponsoring is only a small part, even if they sell all of them.

Over the next weeks they move from Duebendorf to Payerne which is about 100km
from Geneva. In the next spring they will do test flights from there, Duebendorf is
near Zuerich and there is too much air traffic.
May be the people at CERN are able to see it flying, it must be easy to spot
since it is far slower than other planes of that size. But there will be no noise ;-)

Thanks a lot for the warm welcome!

I think I will not use the chatroom, I'm simply too slow to chat in english ;-)
And I know I would spend hours there but have a lot of work to do the next weeks.
