2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
I feel like you are trolling me. I allready answered your question. You just quoted my answer and asked exactly the same question.
Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
In which sector is the short circuit?
It's 3-4
It's 3-4
Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Beautiful x-rays of the short at the end of the Sunday's presentation. Pity there's no description, I'm still unsure if the problem is the apparent pile of debris or the wire-like thing.

Whatever it is I hope they'll succeed with the current pulse.

Indeed they did succeed. Beam to follow!

3-4 now quenched. Still got red on the cryo machinery (not the ring). Come on lads - get your fingers out

We are fully cool !! For the first time since 2012 the cryo status screen is all green.

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
I just saw that, also all sectors are trained to 6.5 tev. Beams should follow soon!
Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Yay!
So am I right in saying that the magnets are maxed out right now? or is this more of a soft limit to maximize useful S-N ratio?

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
The design called for 7 TeV (for 14 TeV collisions) so in principle they can be trained up to that.
And that's the limit for these 8 Tesla magnets, based on the LHC's bending radius

The beam is going round
Sunday, eastern 2015 @ 11:00: Beam 2 is going round!
Exciting times are coming!

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
6.5 TeV is likely to be the limit I think. They've come to the conclusion based on data they have gathered already that some of the magnets are not likely to be able to sustain 7 TeV, hence the decision to limit the machine to 6.5 TeVandrewp wrote:The design called for 7 TeV (for 14 TeV collisions) so in principle they can be trained up to that.

According to the latest plans, they are going to do more training quenches at the end of the year when they have had a lot of runs first.
Especially sector 45 is going to be interesting, I guess.

Making 20 Tesla magnets for the 100 TeV FCC is sure going to be a challenge

If you are really interested, this is the web page of the group that is going to do it:andrewp wrote:Making 20 Tesla magnets for the 100 TeV FCC is sure going to be a challenge
