2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
In the months ahead I will be cleaning up and updating the portal links. Anyone who has any suggestions let me know. As we get closer we will clean up the forum stuff and I will update some of that as well.
Some links to current info..
The start up plan http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lh ... utline.htm
The longer term plan http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lh ... g-term.htm
It looks like the Vistars have gotten a makeover. Which is awesome. Some of these show blank pages from time to time but they are simply working on these interfaces. The drop down box in the upper left corner has a lot of cool new stuff. ALso at the bottom is some sort of "mobile" clicker.
http://op-webtools.web.cern.ch/op-webto ... p?usr=LHC1
Meltronx has been doing a killer job on his interface. Truly awesome. A remarkable single page for all the stuff you need to monitor the LHC on one page. http://meltronx.com/index.html
So any cool links anyone finds let me know. I can add them to the Portal links.
And then in 2020 a shutdown and the even better HL-LHC mods will start http://hilumilhc.web.cern.ch/HiLumiLHC/index.html

Looks like we have beam in the machine again. Not all the way around yet, but very hopeful. Splash testing at LHCb and ALICE.

when is it due to start again, does anyone know, some news stories I've read said it is starting again at the end of the month

However long it takes I think. They are currently doing powering tests and training the magnets, they'll probably be there by the end of the week according to this -

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
I 've seen no reference to the startup progress site: hcc.web.cern.ch/hcc/
much of interest there including links to daily progress reports.
Things were going so well! Is anyone aware of the reasons why sector 4-5 is so uncooperative?

well I have heard that they won't be starting the collisions until Late May/Early Junegilgamorph wrote:I 've seen no reference to the startup progress site: hcc.web.cern.ch/hcc/

Sector 4-5 sux. Anyone know why?
Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
here is a link to the last LHC status meeting.
https://indico.cern.ch/event/373417/ses ... al/slides/
I couldn't find a link the webcast, but in it they talked about how some of the magnets were of lower quality. Cern got their magnets from 3 different vendors if i understood it correctly. One of the vendors', which they referred to as vendor 3, magnets takes longer to train than the other two. In the webcast they said they expected section 45 to take longer to train because it had more magnets from vendor 3. All that said it seems it is taking longer than they expected so something else might be going on.

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
It is not a question of quality. All the magnets are of very high quality! However, some of them seem to be a bit forgetful when it comes to their training ... we have to send them to refresher courses.
During the cold-testing at the time of LHC construction the Firm3 magnets tended to have a first training quench at a relatively lower current than the other manufacturers - on the other hand the second training quench tended to be above the nominal field. In sector 4-5 all the quenches have been different magnets - ie first training quenches.
The sector 4-5 curve is not completely unexpected and shows why the decision was taken to run at an energy of 6.5 TeV and not 7.

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Thanks for clearing that up pcatom. I assumed taking longer to train ment lower quality, I shoud have known better than to make assumstions without all the data.

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Looks like they are making some progress now still slow. About 20 amps per test. About 400 amps to go.
Looks like we might be at this for several more days.

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
hey are they searching for dark matter or trying to prove if parallel universes exist

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
short answer yes.
medium answer, they are looking for any new physics. be it dark matter, super symmetry, extra dimensions, or something complete unexpected. I wouldn't say they are trying to prove anything. The LHC just collects the data, its up to the physicists to interpret it, and yes i would bet that one of them is trying to prove parallel universes exist. I would add in closing each physicist has their own favorite theory of how the universe works, and they are as almost as many theories are their are physicists! (slight exaggeration) Each of them is trying to find evidence to strengthen their theory, and are hoping that the LHC will provide that evidence.

wait so they're looking for both?tomey36 wrote:short answer yes.
