Portal web outage

We experienced a rather long outage of the portal.

This was caused by a serious failure at the web hosting provider. This is hosted at Web.com, the largest hosting provider. According to them it effected a large percentage of their hosting accounts, dedicated servers and virtual servers.. So some type of network outage..

Ive been with them for 12 years and never seen more then a hour outage before AND only seen that once. Impressive for 12 years.. So this was exceedingly rare..

Things look like they are back up so all is well again...

Welcome back :-)
Given the various outages at the LHC all day (and night), we haven't missed much

Well... I actually PAY for hosting for this site and mine. So we are getting pretty good service considering that we are seeing 3000+ indivdual IP's a day. The hosting plan is unlimited bandwidth, unlimited storage, unlimited MySQL.. Ive used them forever and they are quite reliable.. Its been interesting last year and this year. They have served us well, very fast server considering the load with all the people.

To make it so we had some sort of failover second server if the first failed would be expensive to say the least. So, while we did have a outage, these are rare and the price is right, $25/mo... Largest hosting company... Auto backups and restore if needed.. All sorts of stuff avaliable.

I think to get the portal to any more of a robust system would require a truly impressive investment and would not be sustainable money wise.

The only other choise is to get hosted, free, at CERN.. I have asked this, and been flatly refused.. The reasons are numerous but the big one I think is that the portal would then become a CERN thing. This would limit us.. The Portal would have to become a CERN program and get approved. I think one of the bigests strengths of the portal is complete independance. I think this is important.

So.... We may have some outages, we may have some issues.. But I think its the only way we can go...

If someone wants to offer me some high bandwidth, high reliability, redundant hosting someplace for $30/mo or less that has some sort of fault tolerance and fail-over, let me know... Im not gonna look at a small company, its gotta be a big one...

So overall... I think this is a good home...

Oh and.... I think I am going to upgrade the forum software soon. That will cause a forum outage for a hour. I will post a notice...

Bookmark this google cached page of the portal links...

During a outage you can still use the links..

You want to "open in a new window" the first link below using the CACHED link and then bookmark it..

I have setup uptime monitoring with checks every 2 minutes..

It will alert me of any outage..

So rest assured I am notified if there is a issue..

I got a email from my hosting provider that the problem is now confirmed fixed...

We shall see..

The April uptime monitor in the above link looks pretty good so far...
