Seems like it is missing the point of a chain reaction, where you heat something up to the point that it starts to self combust. Like this meteor that reaches a specific temperature and suddenly splatters to pieces.



Some goes for the LHC if you start to illuminate matter at one point up to splatter-temperature, and set off a chain reaction. The planet already contains all the energy to ignite our sol.

Or like a balloon being pricked, the tiny needle, input energy, releasing all the build up energy, bam!
