Possible LHC convention!!!!
Hey guys!!!
Need feedback on this please....
We have been asked how we would feel about CERN having a LHC convention
Type of things they would like to know are:
What would you like to do during the convention?
How long would you like the convention to last? (I said Friday to Monday)
How do you feel about having the chance ask questions face to face with the guys that work there?
A very excited Charms!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
Not sure if any of these suggestions are reasonable or if I would be able to attend but:
I would like to:
1. See the accelerator and detector hardware
2. Meet with the engineers who designed & operate the LHC & detectors to try to get a better idea of the issues involved in making it operate and what we see going on here as the equipment is gradually brought up to full power. I think this is what would interest me most.
3. Meet with the experimenters using the equipment, in particular I would like to know more about what they do with the flood of data that a detector produces.
4. And I could easily manage without a pep-talk from a PR person explaining how important the LHC is, big bang, black holes etc. etc. I would hope that we could concentrate on technical issues & understanding.
So that answers questions 1 and 3 I think. As regards duration, Friday to Monday seems reasonable - any more would probably be rather costly as well as requiring me to get a lot of time off...
I must say I rather like the idea

Sounds awesome, but i live in the US so getting there would be way too expensive.

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
I think we would have to have a discussion about where everybody lives and stuff like that.....
because there is people all over the world we would have a arrange a date that would be suitable for everybody
just an idea and of course we will have to look at the prices of things how much to get there, how much hotels and others places are.

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
I'm potentially interested, time would be my major issue. One way or another I'd find the money as it would a once in a lifetime experience.
What would you like to do during the convention?
I'd love to see the CCC and other experiment control rooms. A visit to the tunnel would be awesome but probably out of the question. I think being in the CCC and having someone explain the steps they're going through while cycling the machine through a fill would be awesome.
How long would you like the convention to last? (I said Friday to Monday)
That sounds about right, an extended weekend, arrive Friday, events Saturday and Sunday, leave Monday.
How do you feel about having the chance ask questions face to face with the guys that work there?
Nervous ! I'd be worried about asking stupid questions :$ But it sounds awesome I'd be really interested to hear the whole story from end to end of how the LHC was conceived, designed and built.

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
All sounds good. I think we need some possible dates to know if we can make it.
Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
How about a an internet convention? That way, the many people who can't afford (timewise, moneywise or otherwise) to go can join in.
I was thinking of one or more IRC sessions/video chats with interesting people.
And indeed, we already knowt the LHC is important, otherwise we wouldn't be here...
But it DOES sound exciting.

That sounds like am really good idea, that could be a very nice little back up at last something for them to think about if we can't sort something out about getting us there in personTau wrote:How about a an internet convention? Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
Sounds also interesting to me, fr to mo sounds reasonable. since I live not so far away from the LHC the original location would be fvoured by me, but I could consider also others eithin the same range.
Sounds interesting but am not sure if I could make it because of money and familyissues.

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
I would definitely attend.
A long weekend would be good. A half day for each of the four major experiments and one day for the accelerator itself.
If the machine is shut down at the time of the convention it would be nice to see the detectors. If the machine is running then I would like to see the control rooms, especially the CCC during injection. If it were possible to talk to people in the control rooms this would be ideal.
I would be very interested to see
* A lecture giving an overview of the machine status. Machine uptime, fill patterns, integrated luminosity delivered etc.
* A lecture on the different searches for new physics currently in progress
* A poster session where we could talk to people analysing the data.

I have no idea what is happening with this, will send some emails in the next few days and let you all know if I hear anything back.

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
OK the convention idea is a no go, so looks like if we are wanting to go over we have to arrange something between us this could be fun if nothing else Apparently Feb is a good time but that might be a problem for some people however if we do get there we will get a tour and a discussion would last a day or two, let me know what you think and we will take it from there

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
Well, without a doubt, the need to see the accelerator and detector hardware should be stressed out. Also, try to see all those who are working with the equipment’s and try to get maximum info and learn some tips from them for that could turn out to be very useful for you later on. You could also do the above same with engineers if you would like, if you have the time that is! And finally ask your personal doubts.

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
I am taking it that you are interested anzina!! just getting ideas and everything together at the minute, the most important thing is to make sure we get a time when is suitable for everybody! we don't all live in the same country so things are not always easy to get sorted there is going to be things that we will not be able to see of course but it will be good fun anyway Thank you for your imput

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
Please add my name to the CERN convention list as both myself and my wife (a chemist and electro-mechanical designer) are very interested.
