What is where in LHC sectors?

Post by serych » Tue Mar 02, 2010 3:32 pm

I would like to create simillar tooltip equiped image as the one on the page:
http://meltronx.com/lhc2.html is (under the Vistars page).

But I wolud like to go to more details. My ideal would be to describe all the places on:
http://lhc.web.cern.ch/lhc/LHCUnder.pdf

Does anybody know the link to some document in which I could find the information what is where in LHC?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi Jakub,

a quick description of what is where in the LHC (long straight sections):

point 1: ATLAS
point 2: injection equipment for beam 1 (left of ALICE), where left refers to a viewpoint from the inside of the tunnel-ring
point 3: lots of collimators (for betatron cleaning)
point 4: RF acceleration cavities and most of the beam instrumentation
point 5: CMS
point 6: beam dump system to safely extract both beams through dedicated transfer tunnels onto the beam dumps (big blocks of graphite surrounded by steel and concrete, the graveyard of particles which are not lost otherwise on their journey around the ring)
point 7: lots of collimators (for momentum cleaning)
point 8: LHCb and injection equipment for beam 2

cheers, Markus (LHC operator)

Thanks Markus,
this "what is where" you have described is known to me, but unfortunately it is too coarse for me.

On the other hand I have also found many very detailed documents nearly "about each screw used" on the CERN webs, but it is too detailed for me.

I'm serching (and until now unsucessfully) for something in between these two extremes, some more detailed (but not overdetailed) schematic of the LHC, something on which it is possible to see for example placement of FODO cells, arc cells with bipolar magnets, RF cavities and other important LHC devices.

Thanks in advance for any info

Jakub

Thanks Harbles,
it's exactly the level I was searching for. It's interesting, that for Atlas document (and only for this one) password is required and CERN external account isn't enough, but I don't need so detailed document about Atlas now. The first one about the LHC ring as whole is just perfect for me now.

Thanks once again!
