I saw two posts on the uslhc-blog which may explain a bit how they search
for new particles. One explains in a relative easy way how they try to find the Higgs:

The other one is about Feynman diagrams (despite there is none in it AFAIK).
It is a lot more detailed and without some background difficult to understand.
But it shows (besides some other interesting things) how the data from the
experiments is tested for new particles:
