What is AGK

Post by rudolfst » Mon Apr 27, 2015 8:02 am

What is this AGK that is mentioned in the morning meetings the last few days? E.g. https://indico.cern.ch/event/388601/con ... ides/0.pdf

Here: http://maalpu.org/lhc/LHC.abbrs.htm
I found:
AGK Abort Gap Keeper
AGK Abramovsky-Gribov-Kanchelli rules (in the analysis of multiple parton chains)

I hope I haven't asked a question that was already answered in another topic.

You answered it yourself: AGK = Abort Gap Keeper.

Is is a hardwired part of the beam dump system to ensure that beam is not injected into the abort gap.

The abort gap is a region in time where there is a gap in the beam to allow the beam dump kickers to rise to their full field in order to extract the beam cleanly. It is about 3 micro-seconds long ( out of the 88 micro seconds that makes up the LHC circumference (expressed in time rather than distance for particles traveling at more-or-less the speed of light.

Thanks,
So this "keeps" the abort gap.
You say "hardwired part", does this mean it is a piece of hardware, separate from all of the software that controls the loading of the LHC with protons?

Hardwired in the sense that it cannot easily be changed - we are, after all talking about a timing synchronization system at the ns level. It is an integral part of the injection and dump system and is mostly implemented in analog electronics
