Hi Xymox, you mentioned a "brand new" LHCb view, would you consider that the best place to view things happening ? I'm generally using the LHC Status Ops view (as a screensaver almost) to see what's going on. Very keen to find a more detailed "exciting" view.

Somewhere else in this forum someoen posted, that at this early stage the magnets are allways set up in that way that the 2 beams cross in all experiments. If that is true this means whenever they have 2 beams running there is a more or less chance of collissions also when they are only test ramping to higher energys.
I guess this record collission was such an expected, but accidental event.

The beam lines for the two beams always intersect at the 4 points where experiments are located. The CCC makes collisions happen when they adjust the RF system to get the beam bunches to be at the IP at the same. There are more systems that have not yet been brought online to compress the bunches so the protons are very tightly packed in their bunch thereby increasing the probability of collisions. Also they have only had 4 bunches in each beam. There system is designed to have 2808 bunches per beam. So you can see these are still early days and any collisions are used to calibrate detectors and verify they are working correctly.
