Im looking for underground webcams of the rings. Would be interesting to have some sound also... Does it sound like a suped up Delorian when ramped up?

I'm guessing at full power it will sound like a very large bee

So.. what does a few billion protons crusing around a cylinder sound like?

Probably sounds like a few billion protons cruising around a cylinder.

They cruise in vacuum so there's not much to hear.

what about when these loaded bunch of protons become extremely unstable.. there surely has to be sound propogation on our side of the vacuum

I got more news about that.
I asked a friend working on beam dumps and collimator.

About beam dump, as it makes the material going from a low temparature to a high one, it deforms the metal. The chock wave can bounce back several times. Thus, when it meet air it produces sound.
He has to check for the case of LHC, but most likely something really really loud.

About the collimators, when particles are hitting a collimator it does the same kind of thing.
But here apparently they are using "microphone" to track how much protons are hitting a collimator. If because of a unstable bump it is above a certain threshold, it trigger an alert.

He will try to get me a sound file from the collimators.

We had some fun moment about imagining what it could be, and even more, how to modulate the sound by shapping the dump material to produce some kind of funny noise when a beam is dumped .

i believe the dumb material is a graphite composite?

I don't know if the sound of the phasers of startreck is so realistic (especially in vacuum), but the effect of the LHC-beam on materials or living creatures should be at least as devistating as a hand-paser (when it is not set to "nonletal-mode"(sorry if this retranslation from the German traslation of the movie is not correct, i just don't know the original soundtrack)) in that series.

Catching a beam at full energy is like taking ~80 kilos of TNT (exploding, of course).
