so what, in the opinions of this inestimable company, do we think we're going to find?

HI !

Welcome !

Well im not inestimable company im afraid... hehehehe...

But my view is that we may find out that our science has basic flaws. Im hoping to NOT find the higgs. This would imply we made some very fundamental mistake about physics. That would be awesome news as then many new things might come from our new understanding.

The LHC may discover the nature of dark matter, study micro black holes, prove if other dimensions exist... The list is actually pretty amazing..

My hope is that we make some discovery that might lead to warp drive and our exploration of other planets. That is quite possible as humorous and improbable as it may sound.

So I am really looking forward to the science results..

In the mean time... I really like the insanely cool technology that is the LHC. Its the most complex machine ever built. A engineering wonder. Truly a stunning achievement.

However it apparently does not have a big red button labeled "collide" which im pretty disappointed about... Ask any guy, guys MUST have a big red button...

I don't know if such other dimensions would be so interesting for every day live since they are thought to be microscopic and also no other worlds expected to be found there.
They sure will be different from the other dimensions stated in some siencefictionnovels, with other civilisations reachable only by pressing a red button.
So in my opinion wormholes or stargates would be much more interesting than microscopic dimensions.

is there any chance we may see some evidence to support string theory?

Sure there is a chance to find Higgs-bosons and even supersymetric particles which would support superstringhteory. But they are just not sure what is really out htere and what the will find.

Seems they've already found something . . . http://user.web.cern.ch/user/news/2010/100401.html

Ahem... 1st of April isn't exactly the best moment to announce something like this.
I'll wait for further news NOT dated 1 April.

On the contrary I think April 1st is perfect for an announcement like this.

Best thing would be to find proofs of string theory or supersymmetry particles. Ironically, The Higgs is actually one of the least interesting things they can find.

I thought one of the controversies/problems about string theory is that it is unprovable ?

Yes, DCWitworth, I thought the same thing. I seem to remember hearing someone say that the strings are so small that is beyond human capability to make anything that prove superstring theory.
