I give the following probabilities:
A. 99 % that you are Robbie DG
B. 0.5 % that you are not
C. 0.5 % I leave to my mistake
I can smell your fear from here man :)
Once more a free piece of advice on fear management: CONFRONT it Robbie. That means: you have to accept a certain margin of insecurity. You cannot know 100% for sure, that nothing will go wrong at the LHC. That's life. Try to live it. Concentrate on yourself, not on others.
erm as ive just noted elsewhere dunno who the feck that is but, I can assure you I never posted ANYWHERE other than here and on one forum looking at legal aspects of a counter court claim against Walter L Wagner and his pal.

Ok, I left 0.5% to my mistake, but I'm not completely convinced yet. You really remind me of him a lot. And even if you aren't Rob, you, being an online-follower of Ivan, should know him too. Ciao!

Correct, ha! And I wasn't.
In that case I will make my advice about fear a general one, and people: Don't be cruel to others who have a harder life than you; and to you specifically I say: Don't talk about things you know nothing about. I suffer from OCD for 21 years now, and one of the horrors of this disease is that you KNOW FOR SURE that your obsession is NONSENSE, you just cannot get it out of your head. So an OCD-patient won't try to convince anybody of his thoughts, he's more ashamed of it. Furthermore: Things like 'LHC-fear', are not typical for OCD-patients. They are more like: have I turned of the gas? or: I really have to wash my hands, now I have touched this person. You see: I know what I'm talking about, when I say we all have to accept a margin of uncertainty in life. That is an internal struggle. It's useless and cruel to bash those, who lost control over their anxiety. :|

yeah thats right spot on its an issue that i have too, i dont suffer OCD rather im on medication for anxiety, so i know exactly where you are coming from, hence why i have chosen to post here, i just know there are people out there like us that need re-assurance and discussion regarding these things in a delicate matter, rather than "OMG OMG" talk.

It's just nice to know there are people out there with the same worries, and together they discuss and work out ways of dealing with them.

Ok Draxxie, I'm all for that, and with some empathy from everyone, it should be possible to keep a nice atmosphere. Good to meet you. ;)

Wow, a lot of posts in a short time.

Well I'll just have a little ramble of my own. :D

What is 'mental illness' for a start ? It's certainly not a binary thing. Certainly there are people who are obviously mentally ill, and people who obviously aren't, but in between there is a great swathe of grey areas. I know my mind isn't quite where I'd like it to be, I am a bit of a worrier (but not about the LHC!) and get quite depressed at times, but I don't think there's a doctor in the world who would suggest I'm mentally ill.

The poor girl who committed suicide ? Terribly sad but the LHC didn't kill her. You see a lot of this sort of thing in the press, heavy metal music and Dungeons and Dragons are other favourites, or nasty films turning people into mass murders. Lots of that sort of thing. But I think that the 'victims' were actually the issue, the 'cause' is merely a trigger, the person would probably have done something at some time anyway. That poor girl was killed by the LHC ? Well it might just as easily have been swine flu, global warming, pollution, who knows what might have triggered her ? The real problem was the people around her failed to realise she needed help and support.

Will bigger risks be coming in the particle accelerators of 10-20 years time ? Maybe but I would hope that the LHC will give us a better understanding of things so that these issues may be quantified and hopefully dimissed.

First...

I apologize. I used the term "mental illness" in a very derogatory way.

I have a friend who has OCD. It is very difficult for me to not be able to help. I have myself been through depression many years back. Many years back I even ran some self help groups. I have a very supportive and understanding view of illnesses that effect the mind.

Look everybody is a little mental in some way. :) We all are a little nuts !

What i do NOT have tolerance for, and never have, is when someone's dysfunction causes another person harm. THIS is the line in the sand. I have friends who are dysfunctional for sure. BUT thier dysfunction does not effect others. It makes them more fun really. Who wants a NORMAL friend ? I like crazy/fun friends !

So I -really- dont like it when I see someone who clearly is dysfunctional harming others. This has always gotten me upset. As it did in this forum. Magnetic Trap is what this whole topic is about. I considered Discern's posting interesting in a dysfunctional sorta way. He was a view into a dysfunctional mind. He did have some interesting posts. BUT he crossed the line and his dysfunction was intended to harm others. So I removed him.

I have a huge open heart for helping others. I have a long history of doing so. However i do not tolerate abuse dysfunction.

There is a positive effect to the "End of the World" fear-mongers and that is that it triggers many experts to come out of hiding and explain in intricate detail why the end of the world is not going to be caused by the scare. There is much knowledge that is diverged in this way that otherwise would not be easily available to the lay person.

As far as mental illness goes yes there are many real mental illneses but there is also much that is labelled "Mental Illness" where really it is just a difference in brain wiring. As we used to ponder in the 60's "What is Normal".

This whole "LHC is going to destroy the world" hysteria definitely made normal people to do their own research regarding this issue. Along the way, most gained some physics knowledge they wouldn't otherwise known. However, it would still be a lot better if the media didn't make a huge deal out of it and scared the hell out of people. Now that we are past the first high energy collisions, we can only hope to put this whole thing behind us once and for all.

Indeed Stephen, here's to the first results and less fear!

Personally I think it only led a few people to do their own research and improve their knowledge. Most people are just slowly learning that there is no point in believing such prophecies. Global communications are rather new phenomenon and it will take several generations before people learn how to use and handle it correctly.
