Re: Christmas Break Question
I would assume that people would stay to monitor the cryo system and other essentials, and that at least a certain number of people would be on call in case something goes wrong?

How much does it cost...
I've been wondering how much filling the LHC with protons/ions costs.
How much does a proton fill cost?
I assume more bunches/intensity cost more?
Do Pb ions cost more to use?
Is there a pricetag per collision?

Re: My stance
Just think - 150 years ago, it was believed a speed of 30mph would kill any person by some critics of rail travel. And yet humans have reached far higher speeds because someone dared to try.
Anyway, whatcha gonna do if the LHC does destroy the world? Call ghostbusters?

Re: LHCb Logfile
As you may know, the protons aren't a constant beam, but are split into "bunches". In the end the LHC intends to run [some number over 1000] bunches at once. If you imagine the LHC as a circle split into quite a few sections, each section being called a "bucket", a bunch can be in any bucket theoret...

Same concept, but Active Desktop support with windows went with Vista (or xp?). The little program on the left does the same job.DCWhitworth wrote:Is that an activex wallpaper ?Danny252 wrote:http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/2024/screenieb.jpg

Re: Daily Schedules and Hiccups
It's schedule time! Wednesday's: -- Comments: Seems stable multibunch beams are today's objective. Not as fun as collisions at >2TeV... -- Morning: - Re-establish beams - 1h stable beams with LHCb dipole off, test transverse steering in IP5. - Continue with tests for higher intensity. Afternoon/even...

Monday Night Schedule -- Comments: Cryo recovery faster than predicted, precycling as I post this (2230). Mostly easily decipherable tonight -- Evening: - Recover from access, expect cryo back by about 22:00-00:00. - Precycle. - Put LHCb dipole back ON (same polarity as yesterday, B field pointing d...

Cryo Problems 07/12
At 0425 this morning, Sector 45's Cryo system indicated a problem with the warm compressor (which is..?). At 0439, all sectors other than 23 had tripped - to quote the logbook: "Now all the sectors except S23 are tripping! Why?" This was soon resolved to be a brief electrical fault that affected mul...

Re: What do the displays mean ?
It appears Status Op has lost its BRAN counts on the top graph, and this is now showing Intensity for each beam and Power only.
