Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Let me echo Terry Burton's post about the LHC status reports. All very interesting. 2012-06-13 110th LHCC Meeting OPEN Session LHC Machine Status report by Steve Myers (26 Min 33 Sec) http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1455674 Alice Status report by Andreas Morsch (37 Min 20 Sec) http://cdsweb.cern.ch/rec...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

New looks for the LHC Commissioning with Beam page, http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/ and the LHC statistics page http://lhc-statistics.web.cern.ch/LHC-Statistics/index.php. Much cleaner. Atlas and CMS are both poised to cross through 5 fb-1 with the next fill which is pretty i...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Pesky cold compressor in P8 giving problems. AGAIN! I bet there were thunderstorms in the Geneva area Friday night / Saturday morning as the power perturbations they cause seem to give the Cryo system in particular big problems. I realize a battery based UPS would be prohibitively expensive to prote...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

A question for those in the know at the LHC, will they consider limiting the length of fills? An un-scientific possibly anecdotal observation notes that the record fill of about 20 hours( fill 6551) produced on average 10.7 pb-1 / hour of integrated luminosity whereas shorter fills ( fill 6557 ) pro...

And another record fill 2651 over 200 pb-1 delivered to both CMS and ATLAS.
Good show!

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

They seem to have broken their record of yesterday already. Fill 2646 passing through 180 and approaching 200 fb-1. https://lhc-statistics.web.cern.ch/LHC-Statistics/ *Edit And indeed Fill 2646 is another record. 16 hours 6 minutes of stable beams 187.8 pb-1 delivered to ATLAS 194 pb-1 delivered to ...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Things do seem to have settled down and they are putting together back to back productive runs. Over the last four days in ten fills CMS and Atlas have each been provided with about 1/2 Fb-1 of data.
Onward!

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Most frustrating Cryo dysfunction. They are having repeated trips of the S 78 cold compressor and are trying to hook that sector up to the S 81 compressor. They are trying to be efficient with the time though fixing and adjusting things in unaffected sectors. I'm sure the powers that be are asking m...

Re: The LHC announcer

Celladore I believe they are groups of corrector magnets that are turned on at various parts of the cycle some before the ramp and others after the ramp. " The LHC is a complex machine requiring more than 7400 superconducting corrector magnets distributed along a circumference of 26.7 km. These magn...

Papers, Prizes and the CDS.

A recent G+ post. If Science at the +CERN #LHC were a competition based on how many papers are published +ATLAS Experiment would have a slight lead over +CMS Experiment by 150 to 149 as of the time of this posting. The other experiments have, #LHCb 42, #ALICE 32, #TOTEM 8 and #LHCf 6. Of course it's...

Re: Neutrinos go faster then light !

Another great piece from Matt Strassler that ties up some of the loose ends on the Opera Neutrino timing kerfuffle with more detail. " Scientific mistakes are forgivable; at the forefront of knowledge, where new techniques are being tried out for the first time, mistakes are going to happen. Some mi...
