What Tau said.
Am a Social Psychologist myself; gave up my scientific career and went into marketing research. Still wondering what life would have been like if I had followed my Dad's advice and studied some "real" science (such as Physics or Maths).

Re: Can black holes grow?
Sorry for moving off topic a little, but I have a question... "Distance to the event horizon is infinite" ... I suppose that is another way of saying that "for an outside observer it takes some object forever to fall into a black hole" (whereas for an observer who travels with the falling object it ...

Re: 2010 Startup
Argh! (just had another look at it)
And it even says so on the legend of the display ... blue and red go on the left as they are intensity, grey = energy = scale on the right...
Me stupid. Me should be watching the Teletubbies or something equally simple...

@ Spencer: yes, that's why I will especially sad if we lose Spirit now due to some dumb sand trap. Built for 3 months of operations on Mars... lasted 5 years (and counting)... and that's for BOTH Rovers!!!

Re: 2010 Startup
I was referring to the blue one, and if that indeed goes with the left hand scale this counts as an epic fail on my part (I was assuming it's on the right hand scale).
I stand (sit, actually) corrected.
Back to trying to make sense of some of the displays...

Re: 2010 Startup
Yup, but that's Page 1 and as I wrote, I could believe in a dry run that would make Page 1 look like that.
I was referring to LHC_operations (Status Op from the portal selection bar).

Re: 2010 Startup
Well if you look at LHC_Operations it shows multiple short bursts of 1.4 TeV and less for today afternoon. I can believe in a dry run on page 1 (there are greens now suggesting there could be a beam and/or a beam setup underway) but faking detector data just for the sake of a dry run seems hard to b...

Aye... let's hope they can manoeuver it about enough to align the solar panels sort of appropriately for the winter or Spirit may not survive...ORION111 wrote:I am saddened by the Spirit no longer being able to move, I had high hopes for it to be able to get out of the sand trap.

Great stuff!
Imagine drinking a beer from one of those...
Erm ... actually that's the easy part ... imagine a whole evening at the pub drinking from them...
I think I need to lie down now.

Hope you don't mind me adding a few of my own here. If you do just tell me and I'll repost in another thread. Every morning just after arriving at work and switching on my comp I go to APOD for some inspiration. Real work can only happen after visiting that page. :geek: Five Years on Mars There is a...

The first line of that wiki page provides the clue: body of standing water. If the pond were leaking there would be no pond as the water would have leaked away. Q.E.D.
