Re: What is a "Piquet"

Piquet is a french term - it means a standby service. For many systems there is a piquet service in place where people take it in turns to be on-call in case of need - breakdowns etc. This is not usually staffed by the system experts since the piquet service may cover many pieces of equipment in sev...

Re: 30,000 AMPS, WOW!

The Alice soleniod works at room temperature. I can't remember the exact figure, but the voltage is around 130V. This means an electrical power of 4MW. It is indeed an impressive magnet. It was built for the previous detector L3 which was installed in the LEP machine. For your information the it wei...

Re: Beam Xover questions

In the arcs of the LHC the beams run in separate vacuum pipes spaced by 194mm horizontally. Around each experiment there are long straight sections each around 500m long. In these regions there are special dipole magnets at either side of the experiment which steer the two beams into a single pipe (...

Re: What exactly is pre-cycling?

A pre-cycle is a standard magnetic cycle that the whole machine is put through without beam in order to (re-)establish the magnetic history. It is used to increase the reproducibility of the machine settings.

Re: *** MAJOR power loss and many systems down

There was a fault on an 18kV circuit breaker close to point 1 which caused a power cut on the Meyrin site. The power cut affected the main computer centre and switched off the pre-injector machines (linac, PSB,PS). LHC an SPS were not seriously affected. The electrical network has been reconfigured ...

Re: *** Breaking news ***

The other machines in the injector chain (Linac2, PSB,PS and SPS) are pulsed machines - that is they execute a repetitive set of cycles of injection, acceleration and extraction of various beams to several different users. However, at the moment the complex is running principally for the LHC - most ...

Re: Portal links changes

Page 1 is dynamically configured depending on the mode of the machine so the information available will vary. Here are a few definitions to be going along with: TI 2 - is the transfer line between the SPS and the LHC for the clockwise beam. It is 2943m long. TI 8 - is the anticlockwise transfer line...
