Re: Current Events Discussion

Is it possible that there is still some soot in the beam pipes or magnets, remaining from the incident at September 19 2008 in Sector 3-4? AFAIR they replaced a lot of magnets but they repaired and/or cleaned some as well. As I read about this procedure I wondered how they did this, after all there ...

Re: European Researchers Night

Sorry, maybe I should have written another post, pointing out that the part in English started about 22:00. I was a bit disappointed too as I realized that all of the 3 channels where either Italian, French or Dutch (the latter I'm able to understand a bit, but it is somewhat tiring) Checking again ...

Tomorrow at int. airport Geneva

This may be interesting for people living or working near Geneva who are interested in aviation and/or photovoltaics. The SolarImpulse aircraft will land in Geneva and there will be some presentation. More info: http://www.solarimpulse.com/swissflight/presentation.php?lang=en According to the origin...

European Researchers Night

There is an article in "The Bulletin" about an event called "European Researchers Night" on 24 September. http://cdsweb.cern.ch/journal/CERNBulletin/2010/37/News%20Articles/1288271?ln=en It looks like there will be a web-cast from CERNs Globe and ATLAS control room. Symmetrymagazine has some additio...

Re: Actual progress of the LHC-physics-programm

And I wonder why they call it "beauty". It seems as if Flip Tanedo was not quite right on the US/LHC blog: The quarks have cute names: the up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. Historically the t and b quarks have also been called “truth” and “beauty,” but—for reasons I don’t quite understand—t...

Magnet Energy, Ramp down; MTBF

Hi, does anybody know wehre the stored energy goes when they ramp down the current in the magnets? If there is a quench it is absorbed with large air-cooled resistors, but they need time to cool down and must be ready (cold) for a new run. That takes several hours afair. So I think the energy must g...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

Some thoughts: Did they really believe GSM could affect the beam directly? If so, any switch-mode power converter with insufficient or defective input- or output filter has the potential to do the same. Provided it is installed in or somewhere near the tunnel or the wiring leads to somewhere near th...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

I think I'm not understanding this completely. So here is what I understand so far and some questions, please tell me if I'm right or wrong: The red lines have to be there at a fixed place (but not necessarily at 0.3). The other frequencies shouldn't be there at all, or is only the variation (jitter...

I am so happy!

Hi, today (not far from the LHC) the first real test flight of HB-SIA has been successful.  Besides the LHC this is my favorite project and I'm even somewhat involved in. There is some blogging about it: http://www.solarimpulse.com/blog/blog.php?lang=en I hope there will be more and hi...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

I don't think this thread is really about finding the cause of the hump. I have too little information and background on accelerator physics and technology to even make an educated guess. It is more about brainstorming, giving some input in form of strange or even annoying ideas. From my experience ...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

After Alexeys posts I lookes at some screen shots of one LF monitoring station again and found an interesting signal. It is very doubtful that this has something to do with the hump because AFAIR it could not be seen in the spectrum of other stations. It may be a poorly regulated off-line power gene...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

Back to my idea with the ELF/LF interference: So I looked at the spectrograms of a few stations for some "suspicious" signals and listened some time to a real time audio stream from a station in northern Italy. I found nothing, besides some funny coincidence: At the time of injection around 1:00 Cer...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!

Electrical interference can be caused by an alternative ground path. [...] Has anyone jogged around the LHC tunnel with a detector while the LHC is running (but with no beam, of course)? That's a possible source too. At least some of the power supplies seems to have ground fault detectors: Some tim...
