Re: Vacuum Bubbles

I simply want to know the reasons for physicists saying iron is comparable to lead. Leaving aside the "theoretical considerations", Kasuha already quoted the relevant pasage: Since the appearance of [8], the RHIC heavy-ion programme has also studied the collisions of the copper ions, which are clos...

Re: 2011 Events Discussion

Internal, unapproved, unreleased document - according to someone within the collaboration the analysis is "woefully incomplete". I'll wait until something gets published, or at least makes it as far as Arxiv Oh, absolutely. It's really unlikely to hold up. But these rumours are fun ;) Then again it...

Re: Search for microscopic black holes signatures at the LHC

The production of something that is undetectable by the detectors will most definitely be noticed -- as missing energy (when adding up the energy of all the observed collision products). This is very much being looked for. It probably bears repeating that if there were no Hawking radiation, there wo...

Re: Can mass be a field?

I'm not sure I entirely understand your idea - mass *is* the gravitational charge (or slightly more precisely, energy and momentum). If you are trying to understand gravitation by parallels with electromagnetism, you might be heading towards Kaluza-Klein theories, which do the same thing the other w...

Re: Actual progress of the LHC-physics-programm

I wonder why do they call it "beautiful atom" I suppose it was meant as an analogy - an atom is also a bound state of something positively charged with something negatively charged. Maybe not a very helpful one, though actually the mathematics is closely related in the sense that there is the same ...

Re: Need some help with Vacuum metastability disaster scenario

Devils advocate is that the same as the latin "advocatus diaboli"? Yes Is there any reason whatsoever to think that the state of QGP could mean an increased risk? No - that's why I said "devil's advocate" ;) The point of looking at ion collisions specifically is to rule out the possibility that the...

Re: Need some help with Vacuum metastability disaster scenario

The thing I worry the most about is vacuum metastability (surprise) and the main reason I worry about it is that there is so little known about it The one thing that is known about it with certainty is that (assuming we were indeed living in a false vacuum state) nothing in the entire history of th...

Re: Current Events Discussion

Does anybody know why they witness such a drop in instantaneous luminosity (50% in a few hours), where the beam intensity stays nearly constant?
Also luminosity is proportional to (intensity)^2, so you would expect it to drop faster.
