Re: LHC Limericks
you're on a roll (with minor bickering about scansion) I have amended one of them to account for this, but in response to your point I present my all time favourite limerick - There was a young bard of Japan, Who's poetry never would scan, When told it was so, he replied "Yes I know "But I always t...

"Mein Collider ist schnell und vill Feuer"
Said that excellent Herr Doctor Heuer
But he made a black hole
And it swallowed us whole
And now he's in need of a lawyer

There was a young girl called Charm Quark
Who found that her choices were stark
She was told to decay
Without further delay
But she muttered "Sod that for a lark"

There once was that Lady Godiva
Who said "I adore that collider"
So she went round the ring
And ate the whole thing
So now the collider's inside 'er

Re: LHC Limericks
There was a young doctor who said "Will it hurt if I stick in my head ?" So the silly young twit Went ahead and did it Now we don't know 'cos he's dead There once were some science big wigs Who said "We must search for the Higgs" So they built a machine That was wholly supreme And it worked so they'...

Re: Dark Matter
@leohopkins I think your assumption is that dark matter is spread evenly through the galaxy which is not believed to be the case.
I'm not sure of the mathematics involved in the theories but I think someone would have spotted that little issue, if it was an issue

No, I can't see any reason in pursuing ideas that there is absolutely no evidence for.Conundrum wrote:Hmm..
Has anyone considered that the signals emitted by LHC *might* show up in a parallel Universe as some sort of micro blitzar-like phenomena?

Re: Mental illness
I seem to recall reading that Tesla had bipolar, OCD AND possibly some traits of ASD. Also worth mentioning is that Einstein almost certainly had some brain abnormality associated with autism, they proved this conclusively but he may have made up the deficit because of the high number of glial cell...

Re: What Causes Lightning?
The magnet anomaly shows exactly what happens when it overloads, it can't run away like a nuclear reactor so no worries there. Sure, although I'm curious if the beam would be deflected out of the ring and shoot upwards that the beam could cause for lethal radiation above ground, the facility is 175...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
The design called for 7 TeV (for 14 TeV collisions) so in principle they can be trained up to that. And that's the limit for these 8 Tesla magnets, based on the LHC's bending radius 6.5 TeV is likely to be the limit I think. They've come to the conclusion based on data they have gathered already th...

Re: Page with daily LHC minutes?
My guess would be the manufacturer of the magnets. They were produced by three different companies and for reasons that aren't properly understood the three types have slightly different characteristics despite the specification being theoretically identical and tightly controlled. That is also, I b...

However long it takes I think. They are currently doing powering tests and training the magnets, they'll probably be there by the end of the week according to this -

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Looks like we have beam in the machine again. Not all the way around yet, but very hopeful. Splash testing at LHCb and ALICE.
