Re: They are back and in Cllsion

~3 more weeks until we get stable beams and data collection can start :).

By the time of the summer conferences, we should have enough data to see if the diphoton bump is something real or not.

Re: this place has gotten quiet

Oh come on, chelle. Do you really want to transform literally every thread in this forum into a platform for your nonsense? No wonder it is getting quiet. No one wants that apart from you. It is certainly one of the reasons I rarely look into this forum. The admins don't seem to care, and why should...

Re: here we go again 2

Those waves would be Higgs bosons …  More like breaking waves than, since there's a collapse (bang/particle) that emerges out of it? They are not gravity waves on the surface of an ocean, that analogy does not make sense. … We know the extremely short lifetime of Higgs bosons. Do 'we' know this fro...

Re: here we go again 2

Those waves would be Higgs bosons, in the same way electromagnetic waves can be described with photons and sound in solids with phonons and so on. We know the extremely short lifetime of Higgs bosons.

Following your logic, your next step would be to fight me, and then you lose. Is that what you wanted to say?
I would prefer to go back to the ignore step, because your pet crackpot theory is just annoying.

Re: here we go again 2

Many small collisions = fog
A few really hard collisions = hail

We know the car windshield survives the hail, it will survive the fog droplet "impacts".

Re: here we go again 2

We have the massive ice balls in nature, and the fog in the LHC. Yeah, about right, if you distribute the billions of fog droplets over the whole surface of Earth.

Re: Hi I need a help!!!

You probably need more than just the decay of pions, and the ALICE collaboration should have the tools to simulate events, including the detector response.

Re: Will The LHC Be The End Of Experimental Particle Physics

To write this post, you used technology developed for particle physics. A complete waste of money: who needs websites? That is just one example of useful by-products of particle physics. All respect to Tim Berners-Lee who developed the first HTML code, but if you read a book like The Innovators by ...

Re: here we go again 2

Take a room with a single atom of mercury (needs a very thorough cleaning campaign). Now let 10 billion additional atoms of mercury in. Oh no, you increased the concentration by a factor of a ten billions! Is it dangerous? No, you are still more than 10 orders of magnitude away from concentrations t...

Re: here we go again 2

For every place, object or situation, there is someone claiming it is dangerous.
Most of those claims are pointless.

Re: Will The LHC Be The End Of Experimental Particle Physics

Well with all the problems humans have here on earth, spending so much time and money on particle accelerators is a total waste in my honest opinion. Finding nothing won't mean the end of such experiments, since universities and researches always have motivation to keep going. To be fair, there are...

Re: news story

In 2010, 2011 and 2012 (actually 2013 as the shutdown got shifted), sure. Now they have heavy ion collisions at a higher energy.
More than 1 PeV in the collision. That is sufficient energy to lift a pen by about 1 mm. A macroscopic amount of energy packed into a tiny nuclear fireball.

Re: What are the current records for LHC fills?

On the way to a new record. With an initial luminosity slightly above 50% of the design value for ATLAS and a bit lower for CMS ( why? ), we are at 271 and 262/pb respectively, while the luminosity is still 32% the design value after ~19 hours. Don't see plans to dump it yet, so in two hours we can ...

Re: What are the current records for LHC fills?

It is a record for 2015. 2012 had a higher luminosity, so the longest fills there got more. 240/pb , for example, and I don't think that was the best fill ever. Edit: Nearly 290/pb in a 24-hour-run today (October 27th). Preaccelerator issues are good for lumi/fill records. Now they try to go up by a...
