Because 25 ns beam was found to have worse electron cloud problems than originally anticipated.

Re: Pre-2008 predicted timeline of LHC performance?
Original plan (2008) was to run at 14 TeV till 2016, then upgrade.

Various upgrade scenarios were considered as early as in 2005

Re: New type of matter?
The idea isn't new, it's been speculated about ever since some RHIC experiments and some see further proof of this idea in the latest LHC results ... while some don't.

Re: Any videos of accelerator collisions as they happen?
There's something that resembles your description at about 1:10 of this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BGeW6Nc6IMQ and most likely the flashes in there are either real photographic flashes from taking snapshots of particle trails in bubble chamber, or cherenkov radiation which is just a bypro...

"Alice is also studying proton-proton collisions both as a comparison with lead-lead collisions and in physics areas where Alice is competitive with other LHC experiments"

It would be a waste to build such a large and expensive detector to run it just a few weeks a year.

Re: multiverse and more!!
I am not native english but I have a feeling there's certain difference between 'plausible' and 'possible'. Anything is possible beyond limits of our universe, including that there's God watching us from there, including the theory that our whole universe lies on back of a giant turtle, or that we a...

Re: Why Dark Matter And Energy YOK
Turkish English Dictionary (M. Yildiz) "nonexistent, absent, lacking; nonexistence, nothing; no; there is not, there are not" Personally I would prefer if you used english as I am far more familiar with it than with turkish. Are we discussing religion, or science? Now that the misunderstanding was ...

Re: Why Dark Matter And Energy YOK
Mind someone explaining me what does "YOK" mean? The best two I have found are: 1/ Yükseköğretim Kurulu, YÖK - Council of Higher Education (Turkey) 2/ A pejorative Yiddish term for a person who lists 3 letter words on the net and gets the definitions totally incorrect. ( urban dictionary ) I like th...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion
If I understood the latest news correctly CMS lost the current in its solenoid and temperature went up to 70K. It will take 5 days to get back to normal so they will not be doing physics runs much until it is sorted. If anyone knows more please fill us in. CMS is apparently still recording events, ...

Re: 5 sigma Higgs !!!
I respect your enthusiasm but I don't share it. I don't think calling it Higgs-Bose-Einstein-Newton-Archimedon is a good idea (and I bet I'm still skipping quite a few people who participated). I'm ok with Higgs.

Re: 2012 Events Discussion
The only "really technical" reason preventing switching LHC off that comes on my mind is that they may have problems with obtaining a safe storage for all the helium which is now cooling the LHC.
But that's just my speculation so I wonder what these technical reasons really are.

Re: 90m physics?
No, they don't stay together for 90 m. The beta star is measure of how precisely is the beam focused at the collision point. As far as I know the last steering magnet before CP and first steering magnet after it are not even 90 meters apart. That just means the diameter of the beam at the collision ...
