Re: Portal Link Changes 11/27/09

Danny252 did a great job on the Page 1 graphic. It has simple short explanations. Thats what we need. We also need the same kinda thing for Cryo ( LHC-2 ) and LHC-OP.. I'm planning on having a go tonight - it's just that it got to 1am by the time I finished Page 1! Because PS, SPS and LINAC are als...

Re: What does ... mean?

CERN has kindly allowed us to link to their EDMS system - a massive collection of technical documents relating to the LHC (and possibly other CERN projects?) https://edms.cern.ch/cedar/plsql/navigation.tree?cookie=&top=&open= The "LHC Hardware Baseline" is probably the most interesting to us. (I nee...

Re: ** Current problem **

Just noticed that on Monday's Progress Report:

"QPS software upgrade on 600A systems all around the machine"

Oopsie!

Re: What do the displays mean ?

Wonder what all CERN's acronyms mean on those displays? They made a list!

Re: What does ... mean?

Page 5 and onwards of this has a large glossary and set of definitions: https://edms.cern.ch/file/445830/5/Vol_1_Chapter_2.pdf Under LHC > Web Site > Beam Parameters if Adobe is acting up - it only worked when I saved the file locally -- EDIT: I went deeper into CERNLand and found: https://edms.cern...

Energy is also great at being confusing! There's so many definitions and ways to talk about it...

Re: ** Current problem **

CERN's Eplanation of what the QPS is needed for, how it works, etc.:

https://edms.cern.ch/file/338035/1.0/LH ... -10-00.pdf

I'm guessing the QPS is moaning because certain cryo things are reporting as too hot (real or not), and saying that turning it on would be a bad idea.

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Energy is something that is transferred when work is done. Work is making something happen - pushing a cart, throwing an apple. It involves turning energy from one form (such as electric If a circuit powers a motor, work is done. Because work is done, energy is used. For charges to pass through some...

Re: What does ... mean?

Page 1 mentioned QPS, so I googled it :) Quench - The overheating of one or more magnets. At very low temperatures (7K and down), the LHC's cables and busbars are superconducting, and have no electrical resistance. Above this, they conduct normally - but therefore have resistance. A quench is when t...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

I've seen a similar diagram to that one, with all the various particles labelled (with some mountain in the background?). That is one of the best explanations I've seen. I need to find my old physics teacher and ask her where she found it... Thanks for the tank link. Some more reading material for t...

Re: Creating "Sparks"

Having thought on it a bit more (and now slightly less tired), you're right on cosmic rays. I suppose if most went through without interacting at all, the ozone layer would be a bit defunct! From what I remember it said water - but it could have been a watered down article for the public, I guess. T...

Re: ** Current problem **

Cryo was acting up 1200/0000 CERN time last night - I saw a couple of the sector 34 cryo displays go red for about 5 minutes, as well as a few other yellows and warning signs. Weren't they having problems with beam loss at position 4 (and RF, situated there, was acting up all day as well) earlier too?

Re: What does ... mean?

Haha, the basics, yeah. What on earth Intensity actually means, what the RF section does, why it's related to clocks, how collimators work... I still don't know those!
