Re: False Vacuum
Particles in LHC are way less energetic than many other particles in the universe. The only difference is that in LHC scientists are watching the outcome with sophisticated equipment. In space, much higher energy collisions occur only there are no detectors to measure results. If a particle collisi...

Re: False Vacuum
Quite a frightening scenario. I know the odds of this sort of quantum tunneling event happening in our lifetime are slim, but still. Basically according to this theory the universe can be swallowed by a bubble at any second. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/False_vacuum A rather startling theory but no...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
Well the whole LHC seems to be warming up I think most likely because they've turned the power off to the cryogenics.

Re: A very warm welcome to all our new Members
I'd like to second what Emmylou has said (although she does it much better). Welcome and enjoy. If you're a beginner feel free to post questions, if you're an expert feel free to enlighten us. No question is too dumb, no information is uninteresting, no pet theory is too wacky for us. (Well maybe th...

Re: LHC Shutdown schedule
I'm not convinced the temperature readings were incorrect. The warmer magnets seem to be the LSS magnets which stands for Long Straight Section so I guess these are less important.

Will it be cheaper to let them warm up then cool them down again or to just keep them cool ?

I'd be interested in knowing the odds of finding the word 'colaptical' in an English dictionary.

Re: a couple of questions
Thanks for taking the time to give me this information. Hopefully, somebody will be able to expand on it some. At the very least I know a little bit more than before reading it. Take a look at this great thread. Info from pcatom in chat that Chris has posted to the forum. http://lhcportal.com/Forum...
