Re: 2018 Operation

Wow, thanks for the really comprehensive report with fantastic detail. I love these sorts of little detail and the amazing detective work that goes into working out what's going on.

Re: Meanwhile, in Japan...

Do you know what criteria they use for calling themselves "The world's most-powerful accelerator" ?

Re: Slight disruption of service

Pardon my flippant comment about tin foil hats, just an attempt at humour, earthquakes are not trivial, I've been in some small ones and can only imagine what a larger one would be like. Earthquakes are something I studied at university, not admittedly a major part of my studies but I have considera...

Re: Slight disruption of service

I'm glad that's the sort of IT outage I don't have to worry about planning for in the UK. On the other hand I fear your concern over 'the big one' being 'way overdue' is moving you a little closer to the tin foil hat brigade ;)

Re: How stringent is the ~100fb for 2016-2018?

For 2016, they're hoping to accumulate ~25fb. But suppose instead they only manage ~15fb and ~80fb for 2016-2018. Will they extend the run for another year, say, or just accept what data has been accumulated? Regards, Jmc At a guess I'd say that's far too speculative a question to get an answer to ...

Re: 2016 operation

Why is it taking so darned long to get to the maximum intensity? With 900 bunches as currently, that's only about 25% of the max possible. Put another way, each physics run could return four times more data at max intensity. So what's the hold up? I believe they are slowly building up to full inten...

Re: has anyone heard the joke about the weasel and the colli

Given the press misreporting of science I suppose it's not surprising that they called it a weasel when in fact it was a marten. Not so fast … CERN’s Large Hadron Collider experienced a “severe electrical perturbation” that “damaged” transformer connections due to a “short circuit caused by fouine,...
