Re: higher levels in nature question

The ultra high energy cosmic rays that people compare the LHC to are from outside the solar system. In fact, the highest energy ones seem to be coming from galaxies with active nuclei.

Re: Proton vs Graphite

When colliding a high energy relativistic proton at a stationary proton, the center-of-mass energy goes approximately as the square root of the energy of the moving proton. You need a hundred times as much energy to get ten times as much energy in the center-of-mass frame. A 3.5TeV proton hitting a ...

Re: ** Current Events and discussion **

By dumping the 3.5TeV beam into the graphite dump blocks, they achieved a new record 3.5TeV collision! A 3.5 TeV proton hitting a stationary proton will have only a tiny fraction of the center-of-mass energy that two 3.5 TeV protons colliding would have. So the beam dump wouldn't have any collision...

Re: ** Current Events and discussion **

There was a trip just as they reached 3.5TeV/beam and so the beams were dumped. Up to that point, though, everything looked great, and the intensities of both beams were very steady.

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Except that there is a sign error here. The charged particles actually move in a circle in the opposite direction. Instead of strengthening the magnetic field, they weaken it. Look attentively at the figures above and find your error yourself, please. I looked at your figures, and with the magnetic...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

I think I see what MagneticTrap is saying here. A charged particle moving in a circle will generate a magnetic field (true), and a magnetic field will cause a charged particle to move in a circle (true). Thus, the moving charged particles maintain and strengthen the magnetic field, which in turn cau...

I see something happening on the LHC Page1 and LHC operations page. Judging from the log, it looks like some sort of dry run.

Re: 2010 Startup

It looks like they've got a beam circulating now (beam 1).

(Or maybe they're just simulating a beam to check the software?)

Re: 2010 Startup

Gotta send some emails and see what shaking over at CERN. Start getting ready for a MUCH bigger event then last year... I anticipate -science- news this time. When do you think we'll get the first science results? I tried to find this out with some web searching, and it looks like the first real re...

Judging from the LHC cryogenics page, they've done sector 81 and are now working on sectors 12 and 78.

Re: Magnetic monopoles found?

what about the last post by Shadowdraxx and the following: These particles aren't affected by the GZK limit that limits the energy of protons. How do you know that "these particles" aren't affected by the GZK limit? I was looking at the AGASA results. There were a number of cosmic rays detected tha...
