B1 was struggling a bit with high losses, but now it has made an appreciable number of turns (small blue blip!)
One probe in B2 now circulating stably

Re: October 2021 Beam Tests
Beam 2 has been threaded through the full ring and made >25 full turns in one of the first attempts. Enough to register as a little blip on Page1

Re: October 2021 Beam Tests
~1 day delay over the weekend due to an issue with a UPS (exploded battery). BIS and LBDS tests took place on Sunday. A vacuum valve controller caused issues and needed replacing. One klystron on beam 1 needs replacing (takes weeks) but beam tests can go ahead without it. Today, following some inter...

October 2021 Beam Tests + 2021/22 YETS
The LHC is currently in "machine checkout": the machine and caverns are closed, all interlocks are cleared, and the beam dump system is armed. Over the weekend we will have some machine protection tests and short transfer line tests. Monday 18th Oct should see some beam mode tests (NB: no actual bea...

Re: Cooling of last sector started! (About quench training)
While at least 3 sectors are fully trained to 7 TeV, the target beam energy from the training campaign will be 6.8 TeV. S23 and S78 are just about there (and warm now anyway). S56 is maybe a dozen quenches away. The champagne bottle under summer student temple shall remain corked (if it's still ther...

Re: Cooling of last sector started! (About quench training)
Sector 23 also had to be warmed up for a repair (diode replacement). S23 and 78 will be cooled back down over August. The 2-week beam test is scheduled for 18th October

Re: Cooling of last sector started! (About quench training)
Sector 78 has been warmed back up to allow for a damaged dipole to be repaired/replaced. Luckily the machine schedule is so far ahead of the experiments that at worst it is an O(weeks) delay to the autumn beam tests.

Re: Schedule for 2020
Not sure which long-term schedule you're looking at, but Run 3 has been scheduled to start in 2021 since at least 2015

The schedule for LS2 (as of Chamonix 2018) is here:

The ULO
For those unaware, ever since the start of Run 2 there has been an object lying on the bottom of the beam pipe in sector 81. It was detected in aperture scans and nicknamed the "Unidentified Lying Object" (ULO). There was some discussion here when it was first detected: http://www.lhcportal.com/Foru...

35c3 talk: "Conquering Large Numbers at the LHC"
ATLAS physicists talk about data acquisition, processing and analysis to an audience of non-physicists. Much of what they say applies to other collider experiments, too.

Re: LS2 and looking ahead to Run 3
First night of LS2, violent thunderstorm caused extensive power cuts. The fire brigade had a busy night.
