Re: What Causes Lightning?
These are some pretty hard questions for a non-physicist like me. But there is a simple difference between photons and protons: Photons are quanta of electromagnetic radiation (in one word: light) so they have no intrinsic weight and will travel with light speed; that's what they do. Protons are "st...

Re: What Causes Lightning?
Makes me wonder if a strong magnet can flick the beam in a sharp angle. That question is easy to answer. Some of the strongest magnets available are already down there in the tunnel, and the angle they deflect the beam about 5 microradians, or 3 minutes of arc, if you prefer. Those 35 tons magnets,...

If somebody writes:

Than that is the moment to start doing else. Don't waste your time reading further on.Genesis 2.0 is true. The rest are whitewash and lies.

Nice to soo you here.
It is often easier to have discussions then on the chat (albeit slower).

I tried to attach a picture of it, but the server gave an error.andrewp wrote:A new world record today with beam at 6.5 TeV!

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
Noticing all these BPM rephasings and other adjustments I decided to figure out why all that was necessary. So I read a few articles about BPM (Beam Position Monitors). Basically it is metal strip parallel to the beam, and when a bunch of protons is passed a very tiny voltage is measured. The voltag...

This overview shows how much they will have to do in these 8 weeks:

Re: LHC Limericks
I love it! How about this one:
The tube is so cold that it freezes
it puts in some protons and squeezes
the protons go fast
it ends in a blast
and all that remains are some pieces
(Yes, I know the ramp is before the squeeze: freedom of the poet )

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
But the good news is that these 8 weeks are going to be very exciting! In a way, they're more interesting than the production runs. I love it see how they manage to learn from every measurement (and every mistake) they make. One example is how they handled the earth fault in sector 23: it must have ...

Re: What Causes Lightning?
if the beam would be deflected out of the ring and how exactly would you "deflect" the beam out of the ring? If you don't confine it with anything as big as the magnets in the ring, it goes straight. Shoot a tiny hole in the mountain and vanish. Hardly interesting. If the planet is going to be dest...

Re: 2014 machine commissioning and 2015 start up
According to the latest plans, they are going to do more training quenches at the end of the year when they have had a lot of runs first.
Especially sector 45 is going to be interesting, I guess.

Re: Mental illness
Well, as someone suffering from ADHD and Asperger I can say: you will be called names, there's nothing to do about that. On the other hand, all those "normal" people calling people names use technology developed by "nutcases" because they couldn't do it themselves. (And if you are offended now, I do...

Re: Fascinating Facts about the LHC
I just wanted to understand that it is not the integral number (400 MHz exactly) so that the slowly moving protons in the same bunch can attain the same energy as the faster moving ones? The frequency is determined by the length of the ring, particle speed, and the number of the "buckets". None of ...

Re: Mental illness
Hi folks! I am back. I don't know if this is mentioned before, but I wonder why nobody edited the "LHC predictions" into the nice end-of-the-world predictions list in Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_dates_predicted_for_apocalyptic_events Maybe I am going to do that, if I find a neat ...
