Re: Current Events Discussion

If you don't want to watch the 40 minute video, you can see just the slides at
http://indico.cern.ch/getFile.py/access ... fId=103500
The information about the dust is on slide 20.

Re: Portal updates.

My quick wishlist of things that are very useful for keeping up with the LHC. I would keep this together somehow: Frequently used vistar pages: LHC1, LHC3, LHCCONFIG, LHCCOORD, LHC2, LHCluminosity The progress page: http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/news-2010/LHC-latest-news.htm...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

we are able to register the excessive flux of neutrino from the Earth already now! (later...) I do not know if there are some online internet pages, which show the present flux of neutrino. Wow Ivan, you can measure the neutrino flux yourself? That's impressive. How do you build your own neutrino d...

Re: NEW RECORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good news is, that right after I posted that, the same night they broke the records again:
5.2 MJ in the machine (new world record), luminosity 9 Hertz per microbarn (new LHC record).
I pays off not to give up.

Re: NEW RECORDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(The energy was 3.2 MJ in that 48 bunch run, by the way. A car of 1000 kg doing 120 kph on the highway is about .5 MJ, for comparison.) Strange coincidence that right after this run was dumped (16:21 on friday), within the hour, cryo failed, cryo tripped while trying to fill again, then there was a ...

Re: Current Events Discussion

It is just a guess, but it could be that some protons are "better" at colliding than others.
If that is the case, the "good" ones would be the ones to go first, so that the quality of the beam quickly deteriorates, and that luminosity drops as a result.

That is very neat. Nice overview of everything that's going on in a very clever design.

Re: Target beam separation / reduced luminosity in ALICE

Wait until the ion physics: then Alice will be the detector that really shines. Here the number of collisions will be low, but there will be an enormous amount of particles, and Alice is optimised for that situation.

Hump hunters official song

The official song for hump hunters is of course "Changing Opinion" by Philip Glass. (Thanks for the tip, Photino!)

Re: LHC beta* 3.5 metres

Indeed, I assume emittance stays the same, and the beams stay nicely focused exactly on each other. It is all in "accelerators for pedestrians", but I admit I have a hard time reading it. The basic idea is that the particles in the beam do not all have the same sideways (transverse, they say) speed....

Re: Predicting lottery number spread using neural networks

A neural network has the same weakness as the human brain that it sees patterns even if there aren't any.

Yes, if you halve beta*, you double the luminance.

Re: URGENT: Wiki cleanup - We need your help!

I fixed about 20 pages. Once you get the hang of it, it is quite easy. I do it like this: - open a page - if it looks messy, click "history" - look for the first revision that looks suspicious (strange or no name, basically) - click on the date - if it is still messy, click on "previous version" unt...

Nice article about the legal case

Interesting read: from another (legal) viewpoint. This article decribes the case (I guess it was Ivan's):
