Re: The CERN safety study

Well, not so fast. The problem here is that anyone can think of horrible scenarios, but that doesn't mean they have to be considered. We have to trust the physicists; we have no choice. Actually, we have to trust anyone who builds a really big machine anyway. And since this is the most publicly docu...

Yes, they were. And it was the hurry that cause the horrible explosion in the first place. I am glad there are a bit more careful now. It would be a waste to break it again...

Re: Open letter to MagneticTrap

Exactly my point. Talking nonsense doesn't bother me, even I do that every once in a while.
(But yes, I guess Ivan thinks he has a good reason; I actually did not expect him to really listen to my point.)
But still, creating fear and distress without a good reason annoys me. :(

Re: Portal changes

Here are a few interesting links. This one appears to be updated recently the last days; maybe the'll continue doing that: http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/news-2010/LHC-latest-news.html This link can be reached via single click from the "field" link, but is interesting in its ...

Open letter to MagneticTrap

Dear Ivan, I have no objection against people who think they've reinvented particle physics, or proved the Riemann hypothesis, or whatever. But in your case, you are scaring people away with the figments of your imagination. Could you please stop posting scary nonsense on this forum? Regular nonsens...

Re: Physics Reading for Non-Physicists

You could also read a book by Underwood Dudley: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Underwood_Dudley This guy investigates (mathematical) cranks. The books are fun to read, and help you to see certain people on this forum in perspective. :-) For starters, here's a nice article by Dudley: http://web.mst.edu...

Too bad, Stepen beat me with a better list:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=326&p=2609&hilit=crackpot#p2609

Ivan gets 301 points over there: it looks like this was just what I was looking for.
Thanks for pointing it out, Photino.

Crackpot index (funny, but serious)

There is a useful list to grade contribution to this forum. http://primes.utm.edu/notes/crackpot.html That page gives some very useful criteria to measure how much of a contribution someone does to this list, even though it is meant for a mathematical forum. Please read it before replying to this po...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Being a humble mathematician, I'll try to convert the math into plain English. It is something like this: Physically, the "danger" of a collision is determined by its total energy; we don't care what is collided. Converting the energy of a heavy ion collision to a "regular" proton collision, it is e...
