Re: Current Events Discussion

Still looking for a sustained run with stable beams though
Sure looks like they did it - 10 hours and counting

Re: Current Events Discussion

From the live schedule:

Fri 08:00 Prepare for 7 on 7 physics
Fri 16:00 Holland v Brazil

looks like they had a good few hours at 7 on 7 last night.

Re: Current Events Discussion

But this time they lost the beams due to a dump caused by a lightening strike :o

Got to be a good test of the machine protection system, at least :)

Re: basic accelerator theory from a great discussion in chat

Thanks for the great information - really makes it easier to understand what is going on! Going to the "Introduction to accelerator physics" link given above I stumbled upon "Accelerators for pedestrians" (http://cdsweb.cern.ch/record/1017689/files/ab-note-2007-014.pdf) which seems to be an amalgama...

That's great for the status of the machine but won't show any collision info, I think. What I was hoping for was an overview showing how the various detectors were doing at logging collisions.

Obviously only the barest overview is possible ...

Re: What does ... mean?

beam cleaning basically scrapes the particles of the beam that are spread outside of the core beam away, so that the beam cross-section stays constant Well, I guessed it was something along those lines - though thanks for the precise description - but what I was really trying to find out was the me...

taking some of the information Danny posted: Point 1: ATLAS Point 2: ALICE, Beam 1 Entry Point 3: Beam Cleaning (Momentum) Point 4: RF (Radio Frequency, meaning..?) Point 5: CMS Point 6: Dump Point 7: Beam Cleaning (Betatron) Point 8: LHCb, Beam 2 Entry I would like to know what the two beam cleanin...

Re: What to ask the LHC team about its operations or displays

Hi Xymox, Can I start with a big "Thanks" to you personally, its a great job you are doing & much appreciated. I can think of a number of bits of information that we could use: 1. A run down on the different page 1 displays as the LHC shifts from mode to mode and what information is contained therei...

I found BRAN in the acronyms list:

Beam RAte Neutrals (TAN type luminosity monitor) and TAN means Target Absorber Neutral

so yes, a type of luminosity monitor ...

Re: Portal links changes 11/25/09

Well it looks as if a few members of CERN (LHC_Insider?) have been able to give us a guide to Page 1 and LHC ops...

Thank you so much :D

I do hope CERN sees this as a positive thing, I would have thought it's great publicity.

Re: *** Breaking news ***

Thanks also from me for the info, LHC_Insider - its really useful & interesting to hear from someone who understands such a complex system. It sounds like you are all having a great time getting the machine up to speed!

Re: Portal links changes

Definitely not more blinking lights ... Your comment about lots of users from CERN made me think - is there any chance that someone from CERN could post a short guide to the "page 1" and "Status op" displays? Some of the items are fairly obvious but others are completely opaque - it would really be ...
