Re: What does ... mean?

I've noticed the SMP 'beam presence' sometimes says 'false' even when there is a low intensity beam present (>3e9)

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

Well I must admit I'm not really finding this fun, just irritating. You are wasting your breath trying to convince him. He's wrong, very badly wrong, proven so but he won't listen because in his own head he's completely certain he's discovered something enormous and no one is going to be allowed to ...

Re: *** COLLISION ALERT ***

Interesting to note that on the same schedule between the 1700h and 0000h collisions they are doing 'Trial ramp plus pre-cycle'

Maybe there's a chance that they might make the 0000h collisions higher than 450GeV if things go well ?

Re: I cant keep up - huge thanks !

Huge thanks to you Chris for setting this up. It's given me (and I'm sure many others) a huge insight into this amazing project that I would never have had the time, dedication resourcefulness to find out for myself. I love the notion of the human race pushing boundaries, the idea of exploring the u...

I guess a lot of you will have seen this but I haven't seen it mentioned on this forum.

Great fun and actually makes a good job of explaining what the LHC is all about.

I guess they just found the tolerance limit of part of the LHC then !

Re: Quench 1pm 4 Dec 2009

Page 1 now says "Start the recovery from access to the machine" so hopefully it's all OK.

Hopefully this was one of Chris's 'Quenchinos" :)

Quench 1pm 4 Dec 2009

LHC is reporting a quench in sector 23. Machine is stopped for access.

Anyone got any further info ? Nothing looksd amiss on the cryo etc so hopefully minor.

Re: Mental illness

Wow, a lot of posts in a short time. Well I'll just have a little ramble of my own. :D What is 'mental illness' for a start ? It's certainly not a binary thing. Certainly there are people who are obviously mentally ill, and people who obviously aren't, but in between there is a great swathe of grey ...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

You need independent verification. Someone independent needs to verify your work. Validate your research. Check your results... You will have -zero- respect until you have someone check it. I wrote hundreds of personal letters to scientists. But I did not received any reasonable answer from them, e...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.

I give the following probabilities: A. 10% - magnetic collapse will start at 0.45 TeV; B. 50% - magnetic collapse will start at 3.5 TeV, if A did not happen; C. 70% - magnetic collapse will start at 7 TeV, if B did not happen. 30% I leave to my mistake. 10% chance over what period ? Given that the ...
