Re: Current Events Discussion
Seems like they've managed a successful test with a 1E11 bunch! Kinda makes the current 5E9 bunches seem inadequate

Re: Beam 2 reduced stability?
B2 has always been slightly worse than B1 - due to the fact it has a different injection route and path in the LHC, which is apparently (slightly) less well tuned than B1's paths.

Re: intensity not dropping in 12 hours
Can someone explain to me why the intensity was so low with the collisions? I figure it was planned, but would like to confirm it :) Would also appreciate it if someone has a timeplan of increasing intensity :) Tnx They were using only 2 bunches per beam - versus the [quite a few more] bunches they...

Re: Current Events Discussion
I've just checked the LHC status screen 1 and there's the energy set to 7864 GeV. Is it a test of the maximum energy setting or just some nonsense? I thought that the 2x7 GeV collisions will require major reconfiguration of the whole device after the 2x3.5 burn in. Anyway, I was watching the 18+ ho...

Re: Several biggest errors of particle physicists.
But if you look at the casualty numbers caused by their even less energetic bites Well done, you've proven yet again that you haven't got a clue nor the ability to hold a conversation. Next you'll be called a .gif of a probe intentionally crashing into the moon an unexplained phenomenon... oh, wait...

You never know - some people think the LHC has electrons and antiprotons, never mind knowing what Hydrogen is!Sphereix8 wrote:Harbles, thanks for the link, great read, question answered. Danny252, thanks captain obvious

LHC Cycle Info
Some nice info on the progress page today: End of Fill studies and requested time allocated - http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/news-2010/EndOfFillStudies.xlsx Procedure from end of ramp to physics (basically, how to run the LHC in Physics mode!) - http://lhc-commissioning.web.c...

Re: Why is energy ramp-up/ramp-down so slow?
Is there also an element of limits of the local power grid - in that it can only supply/dissapate power at a certain rate?

Re: Protons
Does anyone have an understanding of how the proton source works? I've seen pictures of hydrogen bottles on the linacs listed as the proton source, but I don't see how they extract the protons from the hydrogen. Hydrogen is a proton with an electron flying around it - nothing more (excluding the ve...

Re: Current Events Discussion
Seems like Cryo is rather borked again today. Page 1 says they intend to sort it out by 2000.
So whilst we wait, seems we'll be attempting to break Igor...

I can see they've even got beam dumps and injection lines in place already!Kasuha wrote:Moscow tube can provide much bigger circumference, think about energies they could achieve there!
