Re: Current Events Discussion
Nice indeed... lots of info to digest. I like the delivered luminosity vs. fill # graph on p. 14.
Re: Music
yeah, I saw the lhcsound site... what I've been doing is similar to what they call "sweeping the detector" - at least in how I read data from the ATLAS image.

thanks, CQ! more coming soon...

Re: Music
I've been working on sonification of the atlas live display images. Here's a preliminary clip:

Re: Luminance, luminosity, squeezing explained in English
this article http://pdg2.lbl.gov/atlasblog/?p=339 explains cross-section as a probability that a sub-atomic event will occur: What the LHC has provided so far [article written April 5, 2010] … is on the order of hundred inverse micro-barns. This means that processes charcterized by production cross-...

ah, there's no link to the sound file...

1993 article on B+ production in LEP:

Also, the recent LHCb article refers to "known B+ mass of 5.32 GeV," meaning the observed mass from prior experiments.

Re: unpronouncable volcano
for those who would like to actually pronounce the name of the island-mountain-glacier volcano: http://languagelog.ldc.upenn.edu/nll/?p=2257 there are several clips of native speakers - flash embeds at the top, and if you scroll down a bit, links to the mp3 files. Re: 7E10 single injections
looks like they are alternating between physics fills (with squeeze studies) and high-intensity injection/dump studies. this physics fill intensities are edging up... the present fill is ~ 3E10. also, it looks like there is a lot of intensity loss in the squeeze studies, especially when they get dow...
