ALICE solenoid peeks
Hi everybody, does enybody know, why Alice solenoid has regular current peeks, as it is visible on http://meltronx.com/lhclite/lhcexpmag.html ? The peeks are only -0.4 Amps (which is only 0.00133% of the magnet current 30 000 Amps), but they seem to me very regular on the time axis (with interval ap...

Re: Luminance, luminosity, squeezing explained in English
Thanks for the nice explanation. But I found one confusing error in your calculation - one km is 1e3 m and not 1e6 m . How it is possible, that it gives the right result? Is there any other error that compensates this one? Thanks for clarification. Jakub Combining all this, luminosity is "effective ...

There we are - 13:30 beam lost due to momentary "lost cryo mantain in 78".
Not 24 yet, but 21 hours of stable beem on 3,5 TeV is great result!!!

Re: intensity not dropping in 12 hours
at present the collision rate is about a millionth of nominal, so I would expect the depletion to be very small at the moment. It's not question of the present collision rate. Now the luminosity is about 2e+10 protons in bunches and the collision rate is approximately form 11 to 45 per second. in t...

What is the collimator?
Does anybody know, what is the role of collimators in LHC? I have found some documents about the construction of the collimators and about the placement into the tunnel, but I cannot find anything about their role in the accelerator.
Thanks in advance for any info

It's possible to download Mathematica 7 player for free from http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/tswsl1989 wrote:Looks nice from the picture on the website. Can't run it on here (No VectorPlot in Mathematica 6), but I look forward to having a proper look on Mathematica 7 when I'm next in the labs

Accelerator magnet models
Just for the information of the forum, I have created (in Mathematica 7 software) simple models of dipole, quadrupole (both QF and QD) and sextupole magnets. You can study the forces which affect the particles in machines like LHC using these simple simulations. Today Wolfram has accepted it for the...

When they change the Fill # ?
Does anybody know, what exactly Fill # means?
I thought, that it coresponds to the whole machine cycle, but I'm little bit confused, how they change it.
Sometimes they are operating with one fill number all the week and other times they add many fill numbers during one or two hours?

Re: Vacuum and pressure differences
A am not a physicist, but I'll try to clarilfy with what I know. If I understand it correctly, the pressure differences between the different parts of the accelerator complex will probably not cause as much "wind" as intuition would suggest. Yes, you are right. In the high vacuum there are conditio...

Re: What is where in LHC sectors?
Thanks Harbles, it's exactly the level I was searching for. It's interesting, that for Atlas document (and only for this one) password is required and CERN external account isn't enough, but I don't need so detailed document about Atlas now. The first one about the LHC ring as whole is just perfect ...

Re: What is where in LHC sectors?
Thanks Markus, this "what is where" you have described is known to me, but unfortunately it is too coarse for me. On the other hand I have also found many very detailed documents nearly "about each screw used" on the CERN webs, but it is too detailed for me. I'm serching (and until now unsucessfully...
