Accelerator driven nuclear reactors - Thorium energy
Is anyone interested in accelerator driven nuclear reactors? If so you might be interested in watching the talks from the Thorium Energy Conference 2013 (ThEC13) which was held at CERN. You can watch most of the talks in CDS via this link http://indico.cern.ch/event/222140/contributions Accelerator ...

Re: Videos on physics and particle physics from CERN
The Summer Student Lecture Programme 2013 starts on the 4th of July. I think links to videos of the talks will be added to this page. http://indico.cern.ch/scripts/SSLPdisplay.py?stdate=2013-07-04&nbweeks=7 These talks are always great. I try to make time to watch the Summer Student Lecture Programm...

Re: Possible LHC convention!!!!
I would definitely attend. A long weekend would be good. A half day for each of the four major experiments and one day for the accelerator itself. If the machine is shut down at the time of the convention it would be nice to see the detectors. If the machine is running then I would like to see the c...

Re: New particle !
This is potentially the most important discovery in particle physics in the last decade. At last something not predicated by the standard model! It's well worth watching the full announcement video at http://vmsstreamer1.fnal.gov/Lectures/WC/110406Cavaliere/index.htm In contrast to the recent Higgs ...

Scrubbing??
Page 1 and slide 9 from today’s morning meeting talk about 'scrubbing'. http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/news-2010/presentations/week44/011110-lhc-morning.pptx I'm guessing this is some special kind of fill to clean out the vacuum chamber and fix the UFOs. Does anyone have any ...

Re: Let's go hump hunting!
Personally, my best idea so far is to send someone down the tunnel and let him listen for a hissing sound I don't think these frequencies are high enough to be a hissing sound. From http://www.phy.mtu.edu/~suits/notefreqs.html we see that 2.6 to 3.7 kHz corresponds to E and A#, 3 octaves above midd...

Re: Do they use a check list when restarting the injections?
I 've been following along this afternoon and twice now they had the wrong settings for injection. First had the RF freq at 1.18 TeV setting not 450GeV injection freq. Then had the beam tune feedback set wrong. . Where are you reading the RF and tune settings?? Is there a page where these can be wa...

Data volumes in pb^-1 and fb^-1
Many of the particle physics lectures I've seen online quote the volumes of data required for various discoveries in pb^-1 or fb^-1. For example, top quark searches at the Tevatron were quoted as accumulating 200pb^-1 while the total data recorded by the Tevatron so far amount to 5fb^-1 (see http://...
