Re: Prospects for 2011 (via reuters)

From what I have read on the web page: ** They will try to log as much data as possible for two years, then they will eventually stop for one year to upgrade to full capacity. ** They will try to maximize the data logging time, but if possible they will quickly increase the magnetic field to (safe) ...

Re: Merit of different collision types

Hi, Thank you for the answer. I read somewhere that the synchroton radiation is inversely proportional to m^4, so the linear accelerators would be apealing to those who want to accelerate electrons or positrons. The anti- and short-lived- particles were not very atractive for a high luminosity machi...

Merit of different collision types

- The actual LHC collides protons with protons. - Its predecessor(LEP), used to collide electrons with protons. - The Fermilab (tevatron) collides protons with antiprotons. - The future generation or linear accelerators (LIC and CLIC) will collide electrons and positrons. Can someone explain what ar...

Re: Prospects for 2011 (via reuters)

Well, I suppose that they are still very interested by the high-energy-kind of collisions, if you see what I mean!

Re: Prospects for 2011 (via reuters)

Has it been decided yet if they are going to ramp above 3.5 TEV. If yes, then what is the exact value please? This is an interesting, almost philosophical problem: Suppose that they decide to ramp to 4.0 TeV for example when they restart. As soon as the new "4.0" data starts to come in, then no theo...

No, they never reset this. They just let it go.

Re: New CMS event display

Hi, so far the best display that I have found in order to see the CMS activity is: http://cmsdoc.cern.ch/cmscc/cmstv/cmstv.jsp?channel=2 Unfortunately, it keeps alternating between the "page 1" display and the "dashboard". Does anyone know the link for the "dashboard" only, ie. one that would simply...

Re: What do the displays mean ?

HI,
in the CMS display one sees "SM stream". What would SM mean?

Thanks

Re: What to ask the LHC team about its operations or displays

On the same note, I have one "dummy" question: I understand that the beams are not colliding because there are some "collision bumps" that prevent the beams from overlapping. After the "squeeze" and "adjust" procedures, the bumps are removed so that the beams overlap at the IPs (interaction points)....

Re: What to ask the LHC team about its operations or displays

Now, assuming I understand the problem correctly, my question is: Do all the protons of a bunch cross the RF cavity during the same RF cycle? I guess another way of asking the same question is: Do all the protons of one bunch reside in the same bucket? Generally yes, one RF cycle defines one bucket...

Re: *** SQUEEZE ***

So 'squeezing' has to do with reducing the cross section only. They have no control of the length?

Re: What to ask the LHC team about its operations or displays

Based on what I understand, the following describes the collision notation: Sample: 150ns_312b_295_16_295_3x8bpi19inj 150ns - 150 nano seconds bunch separation (bunch is a group of individual buckets) 312b - total number of buckets injected 295 - number of buckets colliding at IP1(Atlas) and IP5(CM...

Re: What to ask the LHC team about its operations or displays

150ns - 150 nano seconds bunch separation (bunch is a group of individual buckets) As far as I understand it... bucket = imaginary box in which protons can circle around the ring. There are over 30,000 buckets in the LHC ring but during a fill most of them are empty and only some contain protons. b...

Re: LHC to shut down for a whole year

The Goal has been set at 1 inverse femtobarn before the major maintenance closure at end of 2012. A fine overview of the situation http://blog.vixra.org/2010/10/25/lhc-back-with-gusto/ In short, this says that they might reevaluate the goals in December, but right now the plan is to operate more or...
