Got post collision LS1 depression? Re-live the good times.

With this 2010 video I just discovered that's described as '
" An explanation of the complete process from injection to stable beams on the LHC accelerator. "

Re: LHC 2013 scheduel

They have the schedules (tentative because hey stuff happens) on the Beams department page. https://espace.cern.ch/be-dep/default.aspx 2013 https://espace.cern.ch/be-dep/BEDepartmentalDocuments/BE/LHC_Schedule_2013.pdf 2014 https://espace.cern.ch/be-dep/BEDepartmentalDocuments/BE/Injector_Schedule_2...

Hangouts with CERN.

So the data taking has paused but the work goes on. Long stop one has almost started, some final tests etc before they finally pull the plug and get to work on the upgrades. https://espace.cern.ch/be-dep/BEDepartmentalDocuments/BE/LHC_Schedule_2013.pdf Also the grid will be getting a workout process...

Here here! Pretty amazing when you think about it. Now lots of hard work for two years to do upgrades and back at it.

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Hi all, I just wanted to post my congratulations to CERN and the LHC scientists for passing through the 20 fb-1 mark for 2012. https://lhc-statistics.web.cern.ch/LHC-Statistics/# Also just a note that there will be a Google Plus hangout tomorrow Nov 8, 2012 at 5 PM CEST, 11 AM EST, 8 AM PST You can ...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

Schedule Schmedule they're winging it I tell you! The LHC is currently setting up for Proton - Lead Ion collisions. Being just about a 1/2 fb-1 short of 15 fb-1 for 2012 I guess they want to try this again as they did in Nov 2011. http://physicsworld.com/cws/article/news/2011/nov/02/lhc-trials-proto...

Also The STS-134 Astronaut Crew visited CERN on Wednesday. "On 16 May 2011, the space shuttle Endeavour took off for the last time from Cape Canaveral in Florida with six astronauts on board. Their mission (code-named STS-134) was to install the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS), the dark matter and...

Re: COOL links

It's that time of the year again. Time for CERN Summer School. It started about ten days ago and some lectures are posted already but it will continue till August 17 which seems longer than other years. At any rate here's the link. http://indico.cern.ch/scripts/SSLPdisplay.py?stdate=2012-07-02&nbwee...

Re: 2012 Events Discussion

So the Hype was deserved it appears. ;)
I've heard talk of changing the 2012/2013 schedule to add a few more months of data gathering before Long Stop one.
Has anyone seen a revised schedule yet?

Re: 5 sigma Higgs !!!

Yes! Congratulations to CERN , The CMS and ATLAS consortia. I was too pessimistic in my estimates of their data taking efficiency thinking they would both be sub five sigma but I guess it was inevitable. Nice fake Steve Myers! ;) So that's about 13fb-1 down and 2987fb-1 to go till 2030. What wonders...

Re: so what's next?

Once 'Discovered' (Which I don't think will officially happen till the Fall and they get more data) They need to learn more about The Higgs and it's properties. The goal of the LHC is to collect 3000 fb-1 of data by 2030 ( they have about 13fb-1 now and should have 18 - 20 fb-1 by the next tech stop...

CERN1 will hold a scientific seminar at 9:00CEST on 4 July to deliver the latest update in the search for the Higgs boson. The Meeting notes for today are entertaining. http://lhc-commissioning.web.cern.ch/lhc-commissioning/news-2012/presentations/week24/2012.06.18-830meeting.pptx 1.3 fb-1 for the week, yay! Workers opened a door in the middle of a run to change some sealing (plombage) causing a dump. (boo) Vacuum spike...
